complete cutout after a warm start- any experiences?

hi.
i've had a little dig about and can't seem to find anything about this. perhaps somebody here can help.

took the car out this morning, 20 mins gentle running or so. parked up, left it 10-15 mins, came back.
then restarted, idled for a minute or so waiting for a gap etc. then a few seconds after setting of when changing up gently from 2nd to 3rd everything went off.
the engine died, like a stall. but no lights on the dash nothing, dipping the clutch and bringing it in didn't restart. as i was halfway down a hill this wasn't much fun as no power assistance on brakes or steering.
so switched off and on again - like nothing had happened.

just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before? my first guess would be hot starting as it was just after a restart having sat for a while. i guess the best option is a trip to the dealers. but of course the missus was in the car as well so this didn't exactly fill her with joy.

thanks.
a.

Suggests an electrical problem to me...

Sounds obvious but check battery connections - had this on my wifes mini.

well i've reached the limits of my extensive electrical skills - checking to see if the battery terminals are loose. don't seem to be.
so its one for the dealers.

Taylora,

Did you ever find out what this was? I had exactly the same thing the other day. Not at all nice without proper steering or brakes - thank God I wasn't going faster. But the car re-started OK as if nothing had happened and it hasn't recurred since. Strange!

hi.
no, never found out _conclusively_.

it got to the dealers about a week after it went into limp mode in the rain one day. apparently the ecu was full of errors about the throttle positioning.
result was the wiring loom for the throttle was replaced in its entirety. no more limp mode on the motorway, and no more cutting out after a restart.

whether the two were connected or even the same thing - I'll never know, but quite possible they were.

alistair.

I wonder I there is a safety cut out is the throttle readings are screwed up?
