Discs/pads for B7 RS4?

Post by Woland's Advocate » Wed Apr 06, 2011 3:31 pm

Hi

I am looking at a relatively high-mileage RS4 and am trying to work out what it needs, including whether it needs new discs/pads. I asked the selling Audi dealer whether it did and got the following info in reply:

Front Brakes:

- Off Side Disc 34mm (limit 32mm)

- Off Side Pads 14mm (limit 7mm)

- Near Side Disc 33.2mm

- Near Side Pads 14.21

Rear Brakes

- Off Side Disc 22mm (limit 20mm)

- Off Side Pads 14.6mm

- Near Side Disc 22mm

- Near Side Pads 14.8mm

This doesn't mean a whole heap of much to me, but I think I interpret it as meaning:

- pads are fine.
- front discs are fine.
- rear discs need replacing pretty soon.

So is anyone able to kindly interpret for me exactly how much life that means the brakes have left in them?

Many thanks!

I'd agree that it looks to me like its had new disks on the front but not on the rear, which makes sense to me, as I have had 2 sets on the front and only one set on the back. Rear disks/pads will cost you around £1k fitted id imagine. Hope that helps

Cheers. I thought a full set of discs/pads (i.e. rear and back) was £1k?

I'm trying to work out what costs might be looming over the horizon for this particular example...

I could be abit high on my estimates, its a while since they were done, maybe closer to £800 for rears with pads and fitting, don't think its £1k for all disks and pads...

Agree with klauster (not that I've had to change my brakes yet). IIRC ~£1k for the front disks/pads with the rears being a bit cheaper.

Front discs and pads at least £1k from a dealer, rear discs and pads about £850.
But different dealers will quote you different prices, so Shop around.
You can save a little bit of cash by buying the OEM parts independently, but be sure to have them fitted independently too (ie not DIY), getting a receipt from a VAT registered dealer with the car's mileage on. If not, you'll be unable to claim on the 6 month warranty if they happen to warp.

Looks pretty much like the profile that I usually have. My usual practice is a new disk at 2nd pad change. The measurements that you have looks like it is on the 2nd set of pads. Once this set of pad wears out, you'd need to change both the disk and the pads. Front and rear wear rate is different dependant on driving styles. Approx for me is 3 front pad change to 2 rear pad change.

Thanks. So how much life (mileage-wise) do you reckon they have in them?

From the measurements supplied above they should be OK.

I would prefer a test drive and a few heat cycles to make sure there is no warping etc.

As mentioned, pretty much depends on how you drive. If I take it for a hill run, I'd say probably 100 - 200 km left for them. If normal driving you probably have 3000 - 5000 km I guess.
