Low power output, B7 RS4

Post by kiwi_mtm » Sat Mar 26, 2011 8:34 am

Just dynoed the B7 RS4. Got 213wkw.
Problem is, my old B5 RS4 did 229wkw (stock), and thats suppose to have ~30hp less that the B7.

I assume this is the dreaded Carbon build up, as i dont seem to get any 5,500rpm kick in the pants.

I've read ALLOT of posts all over the web on this issue, and other than physical cleaning, i'v yet to see a fix, or preventative techniques.

Some unproven discussion have been:
> External catch can
> Run a meth/water setup

Many of these posts are old, and i'm wondering what the current understanding is to fix this issue is, prevent it, and whats recommended in general.

hit me with it please!

Sounds like you have a Vacuum leak. Check all associated vacuum hoses.

This means the power flap isn't opening. Two probable causes:

1) problem with the vacuum lines

2) power flap physically sticking

Most likely is (as has already been said) the vacuum lines.

It wont be carbon build-up.

My car was down on power 2 years ago. It was found to be the flap in the air box seized, the pipe that feeds the flap in box was squashed (probably done in manufacture) and the slenoid for the air auxillary flap was corroded with water in.

I have to say I am not convinced that the airbox flap has that much of an effect though it must help.
I have driven cars with and without it working and there doesn't seem to be much of a relationship

06 saloon APS mapped car had a huge kick and a defective airbox flap
07 Avant on SW0030 converted to SW0090 lost its kick, in both cases with a defective flap
06 saloon, standard map ITG panel filter and new flap, car had a huge kick, same but with intermittent EPC light, flat as a fart

Doug said the timing changes at 5000rpm, there is definitely more to what happens above 5k than just the flap.
having had a quick look at the SSP in the downloads section, the inlet manifold length changes too.
I am sure fuel octane has an bigger effect which makes sense as it allows the timing to be advance further
I am running Tesco Momentum and my kick is strong, APS car had this fuel as well.

making sure plugs and air filter air fresh is a good idea too.

maybe someone with more knowledge that me can offer up some more info and piece all this together into facts rather than my rather unscientific speculation :)

I think the inference you get after reading thru the posts on this forum is that as you've written there's a 'kick in the pants' waiting for you @ 5500rpm. Am not sure whether you lost your kick ie. you had it before or you've never experienced anything at that rpm but in my experience it's much more subtle & you have to be searching for it. I'll add my car is stock

Agree Necks, its the Variable valve timing that is changing, I done away with my flap and it still kicks in at 5.5k.

Here is the Dyno Graph. As far as i can tell its down to flywheel ~360hp peak.

Well, that equates to 286bHP which is not a lot for an RS4, also judging by the radical change in printout, although you have gone back to the same place, it would appear you were tested on different (possibly new) rollers !

It's not that bad actually. You don't have the kick, I can see that as your torque generally falls off and there is no peak in torque at 5500 rpm.

The temp is 22 Degrees, but your intake temp is probably in the 50's on the Dyno. I'd say the drop in torque is just due to more timing being pulled given the hotter intake temps.

Your power curve looks ok, I don't think you have anything to really worry about at the moment.

test was run in 4th
from 65-170 (~40 to 102 mph) you have > 600 Nm
that equates to 2500 to 6500 rpm
600 Nm ~ 440 lb ft?
what am I missing?

More info: Just did the 2x Flap tests, as per the B7 Forum Sticky.

The ~inlet / manifold flaps appeared to work, with the white plastic thingee looking to do a full movement.

HOWEVER, the Airbox one went 'ping, ping, but only moved the airbox flap ~2mm, and not a 90 degree OPEN/CLOSE.
Is the test supposed to do a full Open / Close of the Airbox flap ?? ie a full 90 degree movement ?

Note the miss fires, is this normal ??
PS. Was only serviced 1 month ago, when i purchased the car (they might have just cleared the logs, and ignored issues, call me untrusting!)
