came across a Cayman S

Post by neckarsulm » Wed Mar 16, 2011 2:05 pm

I don't normally bother but I could see him trying to catch me up so I slowed down so he could and let him pass, then tagged onto is backside on the approach to a roundabout on a private dual carriageway.
Not willing to bully an innocent hairdresser I held back but he seemed up for it so I persisted in this scientic experiment.
On the exit I got onto the power way sooner and pretty much caught up with him (he'd moved to the left hand lane) and there was very little in it until I managed to squeeze a few more revs than him and gained a car length.
Power to weight ratio is 243 bhp/tonne for RS4 (assuming 414 bhp) and 237 bhp/tonne for Cayman S which considering Porsche bhp is usually as stated or more wasn't a bad show I suppose, a big grey Estate car keeping a little Porker honest must look great!
I had Radio 4 on but he had grey hair so we were on a level playing field :)
Maybe next time we'll get out of 1st gear :bigblink:

a while back I had some youngish guy in a cayman driving 2 metres off my rear bumper (think he was trying to show off to his girlfriend) so I buried the throttle and he was history, seemed quite easily despatced (probably wished he was buried too after that!)

conclusions (1) maybe it was not an cayman S, (2) he could have been a <beep> driver (3) RS4 saloons are much faster than the Avants!! :FIREdevil:

Without knowing if its an S or standard it's not really worth discussing as a standard Cayman is a lot slower.

I drove a Cayman S on the track at Thruxton and thought it was one of the most boring cars I'd ever been in. Then I went on to the 430 Scuderia though and that' a bit of a different story.....

When I first read the title of this thread I thought you were referring to what you do in the privacy of your own garage! :bigblink:

Despite looking rather soft, the CaymanS is pretty potent in the MT guise. Typically on a weekend run, I'm only able to squeeze maybe 2-3 cars length on a 1 km stretch with the missus behind in the CaymanS. Its not an easy car to get up to speed and it gets worse if its the 1st gen auto box units. On a manual however, a determined driver can do pretty well if he (or she for this case) is willing to push and maintain the revs at the upper region of things.
