Although non RS related I would appreciate any thoughts ...

I had a nervous call from my sister (her Husband is in Afgan) today. She had been refueling at a local petrol station when a lady in a scrotty mondeo pulled up a took a picture of her car (08 Mitusbushi warrior). The woman then drove off without refueling her car or entering the garage for supplies. I told her it was probably because the lady liked the look of the car and had taken a picture to show to someone to find out the make of it. But could it be more sinister than that? ie Cloning the plates or for future theft? Can an individual find your address soley from a number plate?

She has informed the police but i'd like to be able to put her mind at rest if possible.

I am guilty of doing things like that esp if it's an audi ..........the lady might be a mitso fan and on a forum

I would say if they were going to clone the car would take a photo while parked or somewhere a little more subtle than that, but can see why she was worried !

Yes, it could be a cloning thing but unlikely. if the car in question isn't particularly rare, they could just spot one in a car park and take as many pics as they like that way without attracting any attention.
Maybe the photographer wanted to show her husband what car she wanted next?

Think Id be a little more subtle if I was upto mischief, a garage forecourt where it will clearly be on CCTV wouldnt be particularly smart. Infact if this is One of the reasons I leave very little fuel in the car if I am going to be leaving it for a long time... Any theives will have to buy fuel if they want to get anywhere.

It would have been polite to have asked if she can take a photo though, and would have stopped your sis worrying.

What did the person look like, did she look like your average chav/pykie? what area was it?

It was the car she was taking photos off wasn't it and not her?

Wait and see what the police say. AFAIK anyone can take pictures in a public place but a petrol station forecourt isn't a public place.

It was actually the petrol attendant that informed her that that woman had taken a picture and he took down the vehicles number plate. My sis has phoned to Police who said it was worth calling them, they said it could either be cloning or a person with mental health issues! At least now if any parking/speeding fines come about she can contest them if they weren't down to her.

The car the woman was driving was scrotty and in my sisters words she looked like a pikey. No, the car is not unusual, just a 2008 silver Mitsubushii Warrior.

Not trying to scare you but going to the police is the right thing as there is a link to being in the forces and you never know!!!

Does she stay on a Army estate??? maybe followed???? was the woman of middle east/ Irish origin( hard to find out i know)

It all can add up.

being forces myself and based in N Ireland i am VERY suspicious all the time when driving etc. maybe its just me but you can never be too carefull.

I think the origin of the woman would have been pointed out if they were not the norm English origin.

Easy spot for Orish, is red hair and freckles and chewing on a spud.

If they were Irish they may have been taking the photo just to be sure, to be sure?
