Cold Air Feed Dyno

Post by caldy » Thu Mar 03, 2011 10:40 pm

This afternoon I had a run down to Motoscope in Northallerton.

Some 20 months ago I was amongst a group of Northern RS4 owners who booked a dyno session so I thought a post-installation cold air feed dyno plot was called for to see if this has improved the power output. Same dyno obviously if not the same weather. My car has only covered 8000 miles and has had the carbon gunk cleaned from the valves so that should not be an issue.

Here are the results - an increase of over 21bhp and 17lbft of torque. I now have over 450ps which is in line with MRC magic! It may not sound like much but it's really noticeable on the road. It pulls like a train just about everywhere.

The car originally had the benefit of a full custom exhaust with sport 200 cell cats and a JDE remap.

Subsequently, the manifold was devaned and ported/polished, silicone hose air inlet fitted and a cold air feed/auxiliary radiator delete carried out.

All in all, pretty happy. Perhaps another remap may make better use of the increased air flow so I'll carry out some VagCom readings and send them to Jeroen for his assessment. If further improvements are possible, I may then need to go to MRC coz it's a lot nearer than Holland.

Now, what's next on the list??? My computer gizmo from Race Diagnostics should be installed soon - I'm on my 5th sample of carbon fibre sheet in an attempt to match the RS dashboard but so far, they're all miles off. Can anyone help?

Impressive results!

Where did you end up relocating the aux rad?

I didn't, it's no longer there. Too big to relocate onto the bumper support. You'd need to fabricate a special.

Oil temp on drive occasionally rose to 103C but water temp stayed vertical at 90C. Perhaps the rumor that Audi have engineered the temp gauge to never exceed vertical is true!

Mickf29 here from QW....

I Saw your work here, nice job. I had a couple questions. I am working on this on my end as well, and was exploring the possibility of merging all 3 radiators into one but there just isn't space to get the cooling capacity up front. So I was thinking of 2 other options:

One was to reduce the size of the left side aux cooler and place up front. Reduced size is better than removing completely I would think. Second option would be to move the aux radiator to the back of the car, under the back panel where my DRC reservoirs used to be. Put in an airflow duct to enable this. Thought about that at all? its a long hose run, the one downside.

On your duct work, I was going to put in a blank panel the size of the radiator and connect the hose to it, let the plenum the fog light is in act as a funnel to compress the air in. With your hose sitting out like this, all you get is the surface opening of the hose. If you create a blank panel and put in a hole the size of the hose, create a smooth transition from panel to hose, you should see much better air pressure readings in the system.

Also think about putting a small bit of filter screen material over the opening of the hose. I will be putting this in place on mine, as well as a moisture baffle to deflect, and drain water.

Looks like the data is turning out nice. What are you seeing before and after for IAT and MAF readings? I should have mine done in the next couple weeks, will post up pics of it. I am still not sure on the radiator option, if I will relocate or resize. ia m not going to remove, the left side aux radiator serves very specifically the internal oil cooler and the generator (Alternator). it gets pretty hot on the track int eh summer, don't want to risk it.

We tend to get at least 70ps gains on stock to your level of spec - so I think you definitely have more potential in the car.
