Suitable roof box for an Avant

Post by drbru » Wed Mar 02, 2011 12:55 am

I hate to say it but I need a roof box!!!

At the moment I am running Whispar roof bars as shown in the pic

Ideally I want a box that I can use alongside the bike rack but cant find anything or know of anything that has a 50 cm width to fit the available remaining track length

Other option is to remove the bike rack and just go for the box

Can anyone make any recommendations.

I hear Kamei are the best to go for

Cheers

I have a Thule half width box which fits comfortably with one bike. On my old car I could just about fit 2 bikes and the box but not tried that combination on the RS4 yet. I have Thule bars which I think extend beyond the rails thus giving an extra 10cm or so of width. Will measure the box tomorrow if you like.

It is the Thule Atlantis IIRC but they are known as half width boxes. Just measured mine and it is approx 75cm so too big for your set up.

Do a search - Halfords have some at about 60-65cm width http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... ice%7C%7C1

The main problem is the bars you use don't overhang so you lose 10-20cm of width.

that was my fear...

Worst case scenario I will just use the roofbox on my own as chances are whenver Im out with the bike I dont need the roof box...

As for going to france this summer, bike should be ok on top and then all camping gear in the boot

I know this sounds a bit pikey & haven't checked the price of those boxes, but maybe the slimest box you can find & then drill holes & mount with U bolts wrapping round the roof rails to hold it in place - not easy to take on/off but if only for occasional use might be an idea ?

Or spend £100 on the longer Thule bars?!

I actually have a spare roof box that I need to sell. It's a black, half-width box of Halfords brand called Exodus. It fits skis and snowboards etc comfortably.
Used once last summer for a camping trip in France. Brilliant for stashing tents and sleeping bags and any wet/dirty gear. It helps to keep the inside of the Avant clean.

let me see if I can post a pic...

Looks good when the roof box is the same colour as the car! Your rear end(!) looks low - are you on SS+ or just have lot in the boot?
