Well on Thursday I am about to try and hit Wimbledon Audi up for SW0090.

I know already that they have never heard of it and despite me having given them a week to find out about it they still know nothing but agree with me that it exists (go figure).

The car isn't suffering from the cold start issue to any great extent but it is rough so I thought its worth a crack to get it sorted.

Apart from telling them the symptoms, if they try and charge me for it, is the general consensus that it should be free? (especially as I have only had the car for two weeks!) I understand from other threads that other Audi dealerships do the upgrade as good will.

It has to go in for a warranty on the back of the drivers seat as the leather is coming away from the frame and it is definitely a structural issue.

That aside any advice about convincing Wimbledon that they should sort me under warranty/good will is welcomed.

If its only two weeks old, tell them you've changedyour mind......that should make them more proactive towards pleasing the customer.

SW0090 will only be fitted at request of owner, hence probably why you have been asked to pay for it. Don't believe it was an official update.....although could be wrong!

I tried pretty hard with Coulsdon Audi to get it done gratis or under my warranty and was told v.politely not a chance and they had never been able to get any upgrade done under warranty

It was offered to me at £60 odd as it takes half an hour- Mines running SW0030 and seems fine so have left it FTB

We should all be on SW0080 minimum as this was a service campaign

See extract from ELSA below, there is no specific mention of SW0080 but it is as I have had that recall and was on that software;
It does say that the owner can decline to have the update as it erases any chip tuner remap so maybe that's what happened with the cars still on earlier versions?

Technical background

A software update of the engine control unit is required on Audi vehicles with 2.0 ltr. TFSI, 4.2 ltr. FSI or 5.2 ltr. FSI engines built within a specific period. Due to a particular algorithm in the engine control unit it is possible that the engine management warning lamp will indicate an apparent control unit malfunction. However, this does not result in any driveability problems.

Remedy

A software update of the engine control unit must be performed on the affected vehicles (two engine control units are fitted in vehicles with 4.2 ltr. FSI and 5.2 ltr. FSI engines).


Please inform the customer that a software update is to be performed for the engine control unit. Ask the customer whether the engine control unit in the vehicle has been modified in any way (chip tuning).

• Explain to the customer that updating the engine control unit can render the chip tuning ineffective, or may even damage the control unit itself. Ask the customer to check with the tuner to establish whether a software update is possible.
• Inform the customer that neither AUDI AG nor your own company will accept liability for any damage that may be caused by updating the software, or by failing to do so. Make a note to this effect on the job order before signature by the customer.
• Should the customer decline to have the update performed because the vehicle has been chip-tuned, please send us the ʼManual vehicle deletionʼ form. Add the note ʼChip tuningʼ to the remark ʼCustomer declines to have the inspection /repair performedʼ

Customer notification

Customers do not need to be informed directly of this campaign. Please ensure that all affected vehicles are checked and repaired during a service visit. You should also inform your new and used car sales departments so that the vehicles affected can be checked and repaired immediately (and not just before sale).

Software update using Software Version Management


As for all work where the ignition has to be left switched on for a long period, a battery charger must be connected to ensure an adequate power supply. Please switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment (blower, seat heater, interior light, etc.). Also make sure that no electromagnetic sources (mobile phone or cordless DECT telephone) are operated in or near the vehicle while individual control units are being updated.

- Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- or -VAS 5051B- or -VAS 5052- (with online capability) to the vehicle.

- Connect -VAS 5051- or -VAS 5052- to your workshop network (CPN).
- Select ʼGuided Fault Findingʼ.

- Perform a "Problem-related hardware and software update". Use the SVM code 24H8A001.

Note:
If you receive a reply to the effect that control units have to be checked or that all control units are updated, but you are sure that the required control unit update has not yet been performed, please inform << SVM_fachbereich@audi.de >> by e-mail accordingly. Please include in your e-mail the Chassis No. of the vehicle, the name of a contact person with telephone number and the reply you have received from the Audi SVM. In addition, please check that your own e-mail address appears correctly.

If available, the necessary software will be downloaded online from your workshop server. If the software is not available locally, or if you have no workshop server, insert an update CD with the required data into the CD drive of the tester.

- Make a note of the figure appearing in the diagnosis log as ʼDiagnostic time expenditure (TU)ʼ for your charge sheet.

SW0090 IS an official SW version, but it's an update on customer request only and not a mandatory update. The official line is that it's only to be done when there is evidence of the car having cold starting issues (roughness and smoking).

I didn't pay for my 0090 update from Portsmouth Audi, just told them I had cold start smoking and roughness for the first mile or so and I wanted the 0090 SW - so they did it without any further ado.

Cheers for that. Ill find out what version I am running and make the call when they either say yes or no to the free upgrade.

Im quite happy running 0080 on mine. Yes it can be a bit herky-jerky sometimes before she's warm but it's far from uncomfortable.

You need to ask yourself whether you really need it. If you have a problem go ahead with the update but if not why change? 0090 may fix one problem but defo introduces another in louder cold starts. That's not something I'd consider myself.

I was trying to see if it was worth getting Sw0090 last week at Southampton Audi but they seemed to be suggesting that it was specific to some chassis numbers/build numbers and that sw0080 was correct for my car. Although they were keeping matters as vague as possible.

I've just gone from SW0080 to SW0090 and I almost wish I'd stuck with SW0080.
I never got smoke unless car was stopped and started a few times cold which happened v. rarely but it did happen
My tailpipes never got sooted up, infact they are going a tiny bit rusty, that's how clean it was running
But I went for SW0090, TBH I have noticed no difference apart from high revs on start up when cold but it's not for not very long, if anything it's a tad jerkier on warm up.
I have checked my 3000-8000 rpm times and guess what, no difference.
So you should definitely insist upon SW0080 if you don't have it but if you don't have issues then stick with it

Is there any way of knowing whether my car has been remapped? Previous owner did not mention anything , I don't really do timed runs etc?

I am pretty sure it is 100% standard but would not want to damage any ECU?

Only true way is to log values with VAG COM and compare to stock or have the chip explored by a remapper.
It's a good point about not knowing if it has been remapped, Audi assume you'd know!

Sounds just like Southampton Audi - vague on everything.

Quick update. Suprisingly Wimbledon came through with the goods, after investigating the idle they said it wasnt necessary for the software update but woudl do it if I wanted and while I was tempted I took neckarsulms advice and let sleeping dogs lie.

Further to that they fixed my seats properly, have ordered a new washer bottle as I had a faulty level sensor, replaced a couple of hangers on the exhaust as they noticed they were perished, handed me the keys and didnt charge a thing.

Seeing as I have only had it a bit over 2 weeks they shouldnt have charged me anything but it was still nice to feel like I had a respectable level of service even though they should have picked these items up prior to handover.

Gives me a nice warm and fuzzy feeling deep inside when I hear good feedback about a good dealer service. Glad they got it sorted for you.
