am going to buy a little runabout for day to day driving to save the miles on the RS4 (should have done it 12 months ago).

been using the RS4 as my daily drive for the last 18 months but seriously racking up the miles on it. worried if I keep going this way its gonna really harm its value.

thinking of spending 4-5k to get something reliable, economical, not too high mileage and fun if possible.

any suggestions? what are people driving on a daily basis??

Just bought a mk5 golf 1.9 se tdi for 5k with 77k, cruise, lumbar, alloys, electrics, auto mirrors and lights!

55mpg and Sarge kept nice!

The RS4 will remain my daily driver. But I suppose it depends on how long you intend keeping your RS4 for. I can't see me getting rid of mine for at least another two years (because what I want to upgrade to isn't within price range until then) then by the time it is 7 years old or more I don't believe the differential in prices will be the same as me buying a second car, mainitaining, fueling and insuring it. Mileage irrespective as it has been seen and said that running RS4's rather then wrapping them in cotton wool is better for the condition of the engine.

That and I buy cars for driving, not for occassional use. As said each to their own. I've used the wife's A2 for the commute and part of the appeal of the RS is the fun factor it gives to an otherwise boring commute and putting me in a good mood when I arrive at work. Irrespective of whether it take me 45 minutes or 2.5 hours to drive there 9 out of 10 the RS keeps me happy.

3 or 4 days a week I drive the wife's GTI Mk5 90 miles a day and she drives mine 2 x 2.5 miles
Her short journeys obviously not ideal...at least once a week the RS gets two 45miles drives to blow the cobwebs away

MPG I get 36/37in the golf & 24/25 in the Rs4....

i would hazzard a guess that the extra cost in depreciation from the miles you do is completely offset by the cost of the new car, insuring it, and its own depreciation etc etc...if its 5k it wont have a warranty so it will need maintaining as well.

use your rs4.

Got a Fiat Panda 4x4, ultra slow not very economical but goes anywhere, can be parked anywhere, well built, and strangely seems to get more interest than the RS4 on the driveway.
Also the only car I have had that a dealer rang me wanting to buy it. (To turn a quick profit when it snowed).

RS4 but I work from home 4 days / week. Also, I tend to agree with PG's logic - just sell it before hitting 100k as this mileage puts a lot of people off, psychologically.

yeah, I know 5k is a lot of money to spend on a 2nd car and have to insure it (tax will be cheap) and i'd likely sell the RS4 way before it got close to 100k, more like 80k. I suppose is it going to loose 5k in value, probably not before hitting 80k, i'd hope not. this has been my dilemma for the last 12 months, and i've enjoyed the car. can afford to run it fun, just something in the back of my head says run the miles up and it will be worth a lot less in another 18 months. Arrgh, i dont know!

I work from home so my rs4 is my main car i also have a 06 a3 2.0 tdi se that me and the missus use for nipping about, its for sale if your interested

What's your thought process about selling it before 80k miles? Surely if you enjoy the car then keep it and drive it as long as you like. Or is there something else out there presently you would prefer to have that you can replace the RS4 with? Cost of ownership obvioulsy isn't an issue?

My daily car = RS4

I'll use the other half's 1.4 Polo from time to time as our offices are on the same road.
More so this week as we used the RS4 a lot when the snow was around so trying to offset the mileage.
Once the weather improves the bike will see about 80% of the daily commute.

RS4 averages about 6k a year.

Much the same as Pie. Do about 6k in the RS4 a year but use it when I want....helps I'm out the country for several months a year. Also have a bike for the "farer" weather (KTM superduke), but it isn't seeing much action at moment.
Have an old beat up Zafira that the wife / kids use - at times they are just to mucky to ferry around in the RS4..
