Does this sound symptomatic of the clutch pipe failure that I hear about?

could be the pipe, but generally that inhibits return of the pedal/clutch
possibly the slave or master cylinder

If I was a betting man I would say yes. If the car is immobilised, turn engine off, select gear and start engine, they should enable you to drive the car to a safe area in the one gear.

You may well need a new clutch, and possibly flywheel. Is it under warranty still?

Car just been recovered to the house (with wife). I jump in the car and notice that the clutch pedal is at about half way down its travel. I reach down and pull the pedal back up and hey presto the clutch is working normally again! Cue much gnashing of teeth from Mrs as I've now embarrased her in front of the recovery driver (oops)
I took the car for a 20 minute blast and everything seem fine, biting point ok and clutch nice and light. There seems to be enough clutch fluid in it too.
Anyhow - has anyone ever encountered something like this and if so does this sound like it is now fixed? I think I'll call Audi tomorrow and get them out to have a look at it but all suggestions gratefully received.

Sounds like hydraulics so master or slave cylinder

Mine did this. It was replaced under warranty by Audi. You noticed it most if you did some hard 2nd gear runs. I had it happen once while sitting for a few minutes with my foot on the clutch.

I didn't expect it to be the clutch, I thought hoses or something else, but it's done 4000km since it was replaced and all seems good.

If it is a broken clutch return pipe (I think it is) you may be able to see the fluid leaking out and will be visible on the under try of the body, it is like a waxy/fluid substance. It may be visible on your drive too. This is what mine looked like when my clutch failed last year. Luckily I was on extended warranty.

I would stop driving it immediately as you are more likely to damage the flywheel too.

Mini did the same as you are describing, ended up a couple of times staying on the floor. But managed to put the front of my foot underneath and pull the clutch pedal back up.

Mine went into Audi and was fixed under warranty - new master cylinder was fitted.

So the car is booked in with Audi for week after next. They seen to reckon slave or master cylinder

UPDATE
Car broke down completely yesterday with the clutch pedal dropping to the floor or staying half way down and dragging. Had the car recovered to East Kent Audi and am now awaiting diagnosis. I hope it's the master cylinder as they tell me if it's the slave cylinder then the gearbox has to come out!

slave cylinder can be done in situ.

if it is slave cylinder you will have fluid leaking into the bellhousing. If you have any fluid leaks replace the line and the slave cylinder - although you have probably contaminated the clutch disc if the slave has popped.

If no fluid leaking it will be the mastercylinder seals not working (the fluid is pushed past seals but doesn't leak out) or the clutch presure plate sticking.
