Hi, I bought an 06 RS4, 46k, from Cambridge Audi about 3weeks ago. While cleaning it, I noticed that the inner tread on the front wheels were quite worn. Tread depth at sale as 3.44mm, ie just within their standards.

I thought fair enough, I'll pay and get replaced which I did today at Kwik Fit. The techinician then told me the front brake pads were about 1500miles from needing replacing! He wasn't after business as he told me they don't deal with the RS4 brakes anyway.

I'm awaiting a call back from the dealer, but I wondered, is it too much to expect the pads to last longer than this when bought approved used? I've covered about 1500miles since I bought it by the way.

I would not be happy paying for both tyres and brakes 3 weeks after buying the car from an Audi dealer

Audi Approved Charter tread depth ACROSS they tyre is IIRC minumum 3mm befre they replace. But I would be asking for the brakes to be done for certain, the tyres would be a bit tenuous but you could ask. Only problem is you have changed them now so they would probably say you should have brought it back to them to change ratehr than buy yourself so they can't do much now.

The 'Approved' scheme 100+ check is open to a huge amount of interpretation from dealers it would seem.

I've just spoken to Cambridge Audi, and hopefully their used car manager will get back to me on Saturday. I've also got Kwik Fit to hold onto the tires in case Audi want to see them. Fingers crossed!

i did not buy a car from doncaster audi because of brakes told me they had 6000 miles left on them i told them to change they said no, i bought a car from some were else, ( it had just had a full set done) i would be well pissed off if i was in your situation

My car had an advisory against brakes on 25k service yet was retailed shortly afterwards with the said brakes still fitted and a tick against brakes on the walkround inspection,sorry meant in depth 100+ point thorough inspection.Draw your own conclusions,i had similar situation with my b5 when i bought that they put new brakes on as agreed but forgot the rear tyres and everyone was always on holiday or busy for the following 6 weeks!!!!!! My understanding of paying a premium for an approved used car was no substantial outlay for 1 year,i also thought tyres had to be a min of 4mm half worn,3mm is no standard at all its barely legal,i took a pair off the front with 3mm accross them as the sides wear badly on the rs4 and looked horrific.

Im afraid relying on the fact the car is leaving a main dealer is no guarantee that all is tip top, it still requires you to inspect the car and negotiate any points your not happy with BEFORE buying,its shouldnt be like that at all but unfortunatley it is.I dont think audi are any different to any other dealer though,its all about profits

Some of the worst cars I've bought have been from main dealers. Would rather use a reputable independent nowadays.

Sorry to say you've no excuse for the tyres - not exactly hard to check can be a good indicator for how the vehicle has been driven and possible suspension alignment/damage.
3mm may be legal but you'd notice the difference on a wet motorway road.

If the pad wear sensor isn't on then you have quite a few miles to go as it's very conservative

Wait for that to come on and you'll prbably need new disks as well as pads!

My pad wear warning came on last year after 33,000 miles, so I had the pads replaced and was told to expect about 20,000 miles from this set of pads and to expect to have to replace both pads and discs then.

I was hinting at the pad "pins" issue! Pehaps I was too subtle

Depends on whether his car has the original or modified version of the pads.....
