Oil temp

Post by goron59 » Mon Jul 19, 2010 8:07 am

Hot day in south east yesterday, but I noticed my oil temp would rise from 100 to 108 when stuck in traffic. Not sure I can remember it getting that high before.

Water temp ok and no warning lights.

Just wondering how hot it needs to get before I should worry.

During a slightly spirited B Road drive saw the Oil Temp reach 116 yestarday. Mine always hovers around the 100 - 102 when stuck in traffice, but must admit I haven't been stuck when the ambiant has been high.

IIRC it was up to 120 degrees C when on the Nurburgring. Some of the forum members from Sapin / Oz etc regulalry post temps like this as normal so the occassional jump up to 110 shouldn't be an issue.

Nothing to worry about fella. temps have been known to have gone up to 130 in really spirited driving.

mine hovers around 200F / 95C during normal driving...and it's beem 90F around here lately, runs a few deg cooler in the winter...

is 108C high for normal driving? that would seem a bit high to me...225F
the highest I've seen recently (90F OAT) pulling a mountain was ~220F

how many miles on the oil?

Mines about 3000 miles on oil.. Rarely have I seen it above 102, even with spirited driving.. In fact yesterday, when making progress, it was around 101, only rising when stuck in traffic, and dropping when moving again.

So I asked because it was unusual for me, although road temp was around 29C which is a bit warm.

sounds like you noticed a change...

check the oil level, ~3/4 hot is where I keep it....
also check the front lower vents for any obstructions or damage
one on each side and the center

preventative maintenance:
pop the side ones and hit them with a power washer
you can get te center one thru the openings
maybe spray them with mild degreaser, then power wash...

I do this every year or so (on all my cars) including the radiator...
when they are clean, they are much more efficient
it's better if you can get them from behind, sometimes not practical

Just a word of caution when using pressure washers do not get too close especialy with the ones that have a oscilating nozzle as these tend to cut best with a proper fan nozzle.

Here in Spain I get over 125 C oil temp at least 3 or 4 times a week, Audi here have said that is fine, but I am still concerned that it is too close to the break down point of the oil, will see if the new motor is the same and post my findings.
