ECu upgrade

Hey All

I am very interested in an ECu upgrade for my Rs, but when i heard that the torque limiter is removed, etc that got me all scared.

I would like to find out from the peeps that have upgraded their ECU's, have you had an problems like engine mountings or gearbox mountings wearing very quickly due to the torque limiter removal?

I would like to find out if the torque limiter when removed will cause these types of problems.
The peeps who have done the ECU upgrade, which chip tuner have you used and are you happy with the performance?

A concerned Rs4 driver in South Africa.

Regards
AxiomX

I think you mean the top speed limiter. Officially it's set at 155mph but I think many on here can vouch for it being a little higher.

A decent ECU upgrade or remap will optimise & enhance the BHP & torque. You certainly don't want to limit the torque! That's the best bit!

Petty sure the OP is referring to the throttle ristrictions in gears 1-3 which limits throttle to 51% below a set rpm which I forget now, even if your right foot is on the floor.

I didn't experience any issues with mine and pretty sure Billy (new owner) hasn't either, it does make a noticeable difference off the mark though :)

That said, I didn't screw the car everytime I drove...

It is exacty that- a "Torque Limiter". Pippyrips is mostly right about what is going on. In gears 1-3, the torque output of the engine is "limited" up to about 5000 rpm. The ECU does so by modulating the throttle valve. As far as I know, this is the case with most late model Audis with throttle-by-wire. It is not related to ESP (traction/stability control). In other words, the limiting occurs whether ESP is on or off. The peak torque is higher than the "limit", so peak mechanical stresses are the same whether the limit is intact or removed. The effect of the limit is more noticable in cool weather, since the limit is achieved with the throttle valve barely 50% open. In gears 1-3, as the ambient temperature increases, the throttle valve has to be more open for the limit to be reached, say 70-80%. So the ramp effect of the throttle plate finally opening to 100% is less noticable in hot temps. If the ambient temp is hot enough, there is no ramp effect at all - the throttle valve is already 100% open during the limit. With the torque limiter removed, the throttle valve movement is more in tune with what your right foot is doing. A tuner could step in and fill in the details, but I doubt they will.

Mines been running on REVO Stage 2 for the last 20,000 km, so far no issues on mountings and stuff. The removal of the limiter has drastically helped in terms of throttle response. Top speed as well.

I use the car for mix usage, some long runs and some urban runs. Don't think it is a problem unless you're planning on red-lining the car at every gear shifts, everywhere?

Cool, thanks for the awesome replies, this at least gives me an idea of the torque limiter, so i guess everything within modderation, redlining the car all the time with a upgarde ECU could eventually causes problems, wear and tear, etc.
Else with the upgrade and the right weatehr conditions i should notice a fair amount of power increase.

@ Primus2211, what is done on the stage 2? have u changed ur airbox? What sort of power is the car pushin out?

Im based in Essex. Also, how would a revo map compare to a custom map from MRC??

Depends on what type of remap is it, Generic or Custom. I have run both types of remap, and the cutsom (being more expensive) was the better option by far.

It depends on the REVO franchise. It is a generic map but if the franchise has a r/r the map can be specifically tuned to your car and they can physically alter the remap tables. Worst case is that they just dump it in via the OBD II port.

I just want the map that gives the most power....only mod I will probly have is a carbonio intake.
