my car is broken :(

car has been running normally recently, service couple of months ago with audi, no problems, until this morning. Actually drove it this morning 1-2am and was fine on the motorway.

got up at 8am to fill it with petrol and when I started it up it sounded very wrong, loud clattering in the engine & really rough, like a lawn mower and it drove with a total lack of power. there was an emissions light on the dash board so checked the manual and called audi assistance as it advised from the manual to be seen by audi for diagnosis.

RAC person arrives, first question, is this a diesel or petrol RS4! great start, eventually he say that he thinks it a problem with the valves and the oil was on minimum (no warning light on dash and apparently they put several litres of oil in at service).

Had to be taken in on the back of a wagon so called another person to do this who told me several times that Audis get lots of faults and he is on first name terms with the people at preston audi because he takes in audis all the time. Great training in how to talk to a pissed off / concerned car owner, obviously thats exactly what i wanted to hear at this time in the morning. was actually meant to be driving to Bedford for a wedding so had to cancel those plans...

got a hire car (vauxhall insignia) which is really marked / damaged and the guy got me to check it over and I pointed out 6-7 more marks on it than he had already noted down.

Overall, top quality service from audi assist.... sorry I mean the RAC. I didnt see any audi gimps today, obviously the RS4 isnt a special enough audi to warrant a f***ing audi roadside technician!!!

at least its under warranty until July (which even at £1600 I think I will be extending now for piece of mind). Its not had any mechanical problems in the last 9 months or so of ownership. so if the engine is totally screwed they can replace it, or stick the R8 V10 unit in so it develops enough power!

Ok, rant over.. :( :(

That doesnt sound good, how low was the oil? Is this another possible warning system that lets you know after the damage is done (like pads low) if it wasnt for the mechanical noises i would say its way too low on oil and dropped into limp mode, ive heard similar on here before.Heres hoping its an easy fix but it does sound a bit grim

Sorry to hear about your issues Priyan. However with regard to warranty, it won't guarantee you get your car fixed any quicker. I have Audi Roadside for 2 years but not a warranty and have two good independents in my area I would have my car recovered back to. Cheaper than the warranty and the work will be just as good as both are run by ex Audi techs.

Instances like this tend to frighten people into warranties; step back, think it through and there is always another way.

Sorry to hear about the problem.

Does anyone know the difference in quantity of oil between minimum and maximum mark.

Does a Miltek affect the warranty?

RAC take over from the dedicated audi techs in the evenings and weekends, hence why you 'only' had the RAC man....they are still very helpful...had a great experience myself when my RS 6 died on the M1, the kind RAC man put a temp battery ina followed me 50 miles so i got to a wedding, then recovered the car to a dealer

Sorry to hear this, but does sound like low oil...could it be a knackered oil pump?

Best to check out oil more often me thinks....but shouldnt the low oil warning come on when it needs a litre?

Doesn't sound good, the low oil level light warning should come on way before any loss of oil pressure occurs. This sounds like an oil pump failure to me rather than lack oil in the sump, if the engine dies when the oil level hits minimum on the dipstick there would a lot of knackered cars out there especially as FSI engines are known for consuming oil.

If it is pump failure then it should get fixed as consequential damage, anyway how does an oil pump wear out it's full of oil..

Hope it all gets sorted out

thanks guys..

before service (few months) it came up with a low oil warning on the dash so I topped it up with a couple of litres. they said at the following service that it was then filled up with lots more oil (?how much)

yeah I know its no guarantee to see the audi roadside boys, had the audi boys out once before on the A3 and once on the RS4 with a batterty problem and they were good, plugged in their diagnostic equipment and seemed clued up on what was happening, then they liased with the local dealer (preston) and gave them a heads up. and generally seemed and spoke with a more professional manner.

The RAC guys did what they had to do but said I had to book the car with audi, sort out the car hire. easy as I was close to home, dread to think what could have happened if it was when I was at the wedding.

The noise was very unhealty indeed. panic warranty buying? perhaps, but cant see that I wont get it done now for piece of mind or the next yr of ownership from July onwards will be full of sleepless nights. When audi look at the car (probably monday now) and tell me whats wrong i'll update on here..

insignia, lets see how the rest of the world do things!

I don't understand your statement/question there? Surely if it was serviced then they changed the oil? Which is best part of 10litres. Min on the dipstick is approx 9litres remaining, so as you can guess approx 1litre from min to max..... If you've topped up with 2 litres, I assume to the max mark on dipstick, then maybe your oil warning light isn't working properly?

Regardless of wether this is the cause of your problem (I doubt it is), waiting for the oil light to come on probably isnt the best way to run these cars. A quick check takes 2mins every now and again or before a significant journey.

Mine had similar symptoms a few weeks ago, ended being the fuel pump.

Hope you get it sorted soon. is/was there any signs of oil droplets on your drive, might give a clue as to if it is leaking.

Could it be Cat/Lambda related or even a coil failure? was the engine violently shaking?

no oil on driveway / signs of leak.

no violent shaking or juddering. was just about driveable but significantly down on power. the sound of it was the most spine chilling thing.

how low on fuel were you? was it fumes or sufficient to drive around for a while?
