Post by garym » Sun Feb 07, 2010 5:53 pm

had mine 2 years now and its been in and out of stealers several times for same prob which has never been cured, it accelerates up to about 3800 rpm then seems to hold back and not go as it should ,problem apart from that is it means you are going over 70mph in top so they say no problem as you at national limit , what a load of crap ,this thing is supposed to 400 bhp and i get out dragged by deisel golfs, anyone else had this prob and what was done to sort it ,

go do some 3rd gear only runs using the OBC timer
accel from 2000, start timer at 3000, stop at 8000 (~36 to 96 mph)
note: temp, fuel load, passenger, mileage, etc.
do 3 runs with car fully warmed up

to avoid error start timer at ~2900 and stop at 8000 exactly
this should compensate for reaction time...
and put the numbers on the high side, not the low

When you say doesn't go after 3800rpm is it stuttering or feel restricted? Could be throttle map or air box power flap.

Also how many miles and what age? Rolling road could be a way to determine but sildly varying, ArthurPE's suggestion appears to be the most consistent thus far unless you knwo someone else with an RS4 nearby who your do rolling drag times with you.

Also, does you car have a Milltek full system fitted as the symptoms you describe are synonymous with a full system Milltek that has not been remapped. The Milly will have eliminated the back pressure in the exhaust and the ECU will as a consequence of lambda readings turn the wick down which is why a remap is always recommended with a full system.

the car is bog standard no alterations ,it seems to get up and go till you get to 3800 to 4000 rpm the goes flat like the cam timing is not advancing or valves opening ,i would have took it back again but 1 they havnt been able to fix it yet and 2 it is now just out of warrenty it seems i was fobbed off till it was,i love the car apart from this fault,it also sounds like it has a spark plug gone down but i have just had them changed and they checked the ecu for faults and found none ,getting really pissed now,car has done 40k

Sorry to sound harsh, but you have had the car for 2 yrs and you say the problem has been there for a while ?

Why have you waited 2 yrs and untill the car is out of warrenty befor looking for answers ? It is impossible for ANY stealer to say you dont have a problem if your being done by diesel golfs.

I even recon they would agree on that out here in spain !

sorry the problem is intermitant,i suppose this is why they cant find it ,it seems worse first thing in the morning when warming up ,but what can you say when it has gone back in several times and they say nothing wrong because they are not going fast enough to have the problem, i know its a mechanics livelythood but the problem is in the higher gears or it is not so noticeable in the lower ones , i even took there so called top man out and showed him and they said they felt it but did not know what it was,i notice it most days when accelerating down the slip road onto a motorway,5th or 6th gear revs come up to 3800-4000 rpm then it stutters and holds back, anyway the question is has anyone else had this problem and what cured it ,thanks

Have you run VAGCOM on it for any issues - that will log intermittent faults. Might help if the stealer is fobbing you off too.

Does the problem happen when cold, or all the time? There was an issue with cold starting and lumpiness where the car held back. (slightly different problem to waht you describe). This was resolved by a firmware update and by "resetting" the car - basically deleting all learned values and letting the car re-learn the values based on driving style.

also recommedn checking the airbox flaps and exhaust valve flaps as mentioned above. Very easy to check and doesnt take long. (See stickies).
Everyone is unique, just like you and me.

I had a similar problem. Flat spot at 4k revs in 4th and 5th. Big speed at these revs. I did have a fault code:

001169 – Secondary Air Injection System Bank 1: Insufficient Flow

Under warranty Audi changed the Air Mass Meter, Secondary Air injection Solenoid Valve N112, and near side top lambda sensor (giving too much resistance). All is fine now. I recommend that you keep pestering your local Audi centre as this problem is known to Audi Technical. Google RS4V8-StudyGuide.pdf it’s very useful.

I had this issue also. It's an obvious check but if the vacuum lead in the airbox has come loose then it pauses. Once re-connected it should cure it.

Don't buy the legal limit bull. Tell them you drive the car on private roads/tracks and that the car should perform as specified (please no 420PS or carbon build-up threads!!!!). As suggested an RR plot would be good as proof also the fact that you have reported this claim under warranty means that they still need to honour the repair even if out of warranty. You should not be penalised for their inability to find/fix the fault after all if they REALLY wanted to they could, I'm sure, arrange for it to be taken to an RR for testing. Persistance is te key on this one and if not getting the service call and write to Audi UK. MIght take a bit of time to resolve but you'll get there in the end.
