Seem to remember reading here that somone had their name down for the new golf? Anyone gone that way or had a test drive? How does it compare?
Was down at VW yesterday but was denied a test drive as it seems that you need to buy one first! Keen to get a spin in one, but interested to hear any thoughts before I travel to another dealership. ta.

From all the reviews I have read they are generally positive on handling/performance/build but less positive about the £30,000 poverty spec basic price.

30k + all the xtras I suppose. And it's still only a Golf. :D

Seen one in the flesh...they look boring!!! Sooner have an S3 same mechanicals etc etc and its an AUDI!!!! Cant believe for 30k golf you dont get leather sat nav..parking sensors..in fact anything...who are VW aiming this car at?? I think theyve dropped a big clanger with this car.

£30k for a Golf, enough said!

I have a Mk5 Edition30 in the house, and that was £24k which I thought was steep. £30k is alot of money, and for that money, I'd be knocking at the Audi dealer.

Looks do nothing for me on the R anyway.

You can pick a whole lot of performance cars up for 30k!!! Albeit second hand...RS4..M3..etc etc. I think the golf will not hold it value at all...whos going to pay 25-30k second hand for a golf?? It would only make any sense to me if it lost residual value like a stone...As VIRDEE says VW only were knocking out high spec GTIS and R32S for a lot less when the financial climate was good. Times have changed and anyone who pays 30 to 35 for a golf is barking!!!
I went on the VW configarator and with bucket seats ,nav etc nearly 35k WTF??????

When i specced one on their website it was 40k

I like it though, looks smart in the flesh and it's smart inside too. Understated cool, rather than rice-rocket / Focus RS spoilers everywhere. Not meaning to upset anyone here but I prefer the look / shape of the Golf to the A3, and is the S3 not meant to be a little bit softly sprung?

By the time it's specced properly, it's ten G's less than I paid for my RS4 new though! Suspect there may well be some ex-demo cars on the VW site soon.

I love performance VAG group cars..its all ive had..but cant help thinking VW dropped a clanger getting rid of the narrow angle v6 (r32 etc). They should have shoehorned the R36 block into the golf..(it could of been done)..gave the car some serious road presence(flared arches etc). It would have had 300bhp gone very well, sounded awesome and looked mean. That engine is wasted in the passat R36 IMO. I dont buy the fact that they went to a two litre turbo because of the financial climate...Performance vw,s have a cult following and this car would have sold end of story. People who buy performance cars dont worry that much about running costs. VW always seem to miss the boat sometimes just not going that extra mile.
Just my ten pence worth!!!

golf r's great and with some tweaking it could be awesom, but a well specced dsg is 36k plus, so by the time you've done you fettling might get to 40k.

way too much

Is it maybe the tree huggers rather than the financial situation? Smaller capacity turbo'd cars seem to be the way things are going. :-(

would you have it instead of the RS4, saloon or Avant?

The outrageous 170 ps BMW 2002 Turbo, also a 2 litre, was launched in 1973 - 3 day week etc. How times have changed :)

May be a bit academic. Just read in today's Autocar that all 350 limited UK bound Golf R's are sold to customers with no confirmation on any more coming?

How many VW dealerships are there in the UK? One on each forecourt perhaps?!

Wouldn't believe that! They said the same about the Edition30 (1500 units), and they ended up producing more. At the end of the day, if they can make more money, they'll do it.

If they can sell more than 350 £30k Golf's they'll do it!

Agree with RS4414 - they should have made a real rival to the Focus RS. Totally new body, kept the V6 engine, gone for the 3.6FSI, 4WD, etc. Now that would have been awesome. I may have been tempted to spend £30k or os. But not £30k + on a esentially a slightly tweaked Golf Mk6 GTI!

As much as I hate to say this, but was behind a whote Focus RS, the other day, and OMG, does that car have street prescence, and boy it sounded awesome. Must have had a aftermarket exhaust, but the way that 5 pot sounded, and popped on overun! Noise to die for. Just reminded me of the old quattro's! And again as much as I hate Ford's, if I was in the position for a hot hatch for £0k odd, I would be inclined to favour the Ford!
