New RS4 owner - Hello to all .....with x3 small questions

Hello to all,

I picked up my black RS4 in October 2009 (2006/sat nav/Recaro seats/sunroof etc) and over the last few months have found this website invaluable - helping me with everything from correct tyre pressures to what I should expect from the MPG (lesson being not to own an RS4 if that’s a problem ).

As it is such a specialist car, I decided to finally join as I am sure I will have ongoing questions (but also want to contribute if I can help anyone).

A few (I am sure Newbie) initial questions if I may - Apologies if this information is readily available/obvious:

1. The Sat nav seems to think every starting point is Abergavenny (Which is nowhere near where I live). Whilst this amuses my friends, it does make using the device a little tricky. As it is a 2006 I am happy to get a new DVD (the one in the car does come out and is a copy), from the dealers at an eye watering £190 - but am not convinced this will solve the issue. Do I need any software upgrade? Does anyone know where I can get a manual - as I would like to rule out user error?
2. The breaks and discs were replaced 3000 miles ago at some expense - yet there appears to be a recent squeak when coming to a stop (only heard in the last few feet). The local dealer is happy to look at £120p/h (estimates 2hrs to take apart) but I feel this is more than a little steep - any (obvious) suggestions?
3. Is it normal when (as I pull away slowly) turning the wheel that you will feel a little judder? It feels like the rears tyres are pulling in a different direction. I have assumed this is normal as I have never owned a x4 wheel drive?

Welcome and good choice of car. Can't answser question 1, never had that problem but have just picked up a brand new still sealed 2010 RNS-E OEM set of diks on fleabay for £90, so save yourself some money.

Squeeking brakes, you haven't used them enough. That usually happens on repeated light application / town driving. Go for a spirited country drive and give them a good working over, squeeking will go.

Do you feel the judder through the steering wheel or clutch pedal? Again haven't experienced this but would suggets slight clutch judder but all 3 minor points are that, minor and should be easy to rectify.

If squeal continues, take the front calipers of, remove pads and clean the pistons - its really very easy to do and you also get the bonus of spending hours looking at some tasty looking brakes....

You need to clear/reset previous destination, the original owner could well have lived in Abergavenny, so I would say reset you home destination. all done in the SAT NAV controls.

What a helpful lot... I would agree with the satnav prognosis, sounds like a dodgy home address locked in.

Is the judder you get from the front wheels scrubbing whilst turning out of junctions (when it's wet normally)?

I get the sensation that the car wants to understeer or whash-out when pulling out and turning at the same time, as if the back wheels are trying to push you forwards faster than the car can make it's turn, giving a judder through the steering wheel? I'm talking normal speeds, not booting it.

Re the scrubbing I think there have been other threads about that. One common cause is that due to the profile of the tyres and the suspension set-up when you've got fullish lock on you get a dragging feeling. So if you're coming out of a junction and 90 degrees or even out of your driveway you may feel the dragging. This is perfectly normal. Partciularly bad, I've found, when it's cold. Presumably the tyres are harder?

Tis more common on the wider profile 275/ tyres & more so when cold. Is nothing to worry about as it's only on full lock & a characteristic of very low profile tyres.

I guess in summary:

1. SAT NAV: I'll reset the sat nav in settings/download the manual/and grab a copy of ebay for aroud £90. Thanks to PG, aidenjaye sonny and MB2
2. Breaks: Yes, Sadly i am a town driver with not a huge number of long journeys - So excellant excuse to go for some long drives and work them a little harder
3. guffy and Phil3103, thanks for the feedback. Yes you are correct, its as though the rear wheels want to 'go' whilst the front are turning too slow. But Im sensing this sounds normal - so feel much better about it

My car also makes the "judder" but only when coming off my drive good to know it is a "feature" !

Re The SatNav disc - make sure you buy a 2007 or later disc - PN 8P0 919 884 M or later letter as this will enable the TMC feature (re-routes for traffic) that earlier discs won't give you. I found a 2008 AA version for 55 on eBay recently so went for that one as seemed best value. Be careful as there are 2 discs - you need to make sure you buy the Western Europe one (unless you have big travel plans) !

Ive got the manualthat Audi sent me by email if you want, and this morning i had the same feeling that you have, the juddering, i stoped, checked the basics, there was no power stearing fluid !!!! Filled it up, problem solved !!!
