Clunking noise.........again!

Post by pad125 » Tue Dec 08, 2009 3:37 pm

Sorry guys I know this has been done before but just for clarity I like to ask if anyone else has had this?

Right hand lock, slow speed feels like the NSF wheel is about to drop off, horrible grating/banging noise. I know other have experienced the '4WD' syndrome with the front wheels pushing, feels like the tyres are about to come off the rims but this is a distinct mechanical noise.

I would have bet my life on it being a CV joint on the drive shaft but firstly its intermittent and secondly its been going on for about 12 months now and if it was it should have collapsed by now. Also seems to be at its worse in the wet, which would suggest some sort of traction issue but definitely sounds mechanical.

I've just come back from the dealers (called in on the off-chance) and there was another RS4 there with the same problem and a guy from Audi Tech Milton Keynes was there scratching his head.

Any ideas would be grateful

Any clunking noises, I'd start with the DRC. Maybe it's not pressurised despite looking like it's not leaking (if that's been checked).

I agree CV boot would be a safe bet normally. What about this multi-link suspension (I think) that sort of turns the wheels out further, makes them look like the tyres are tilting sideways? Sorry, I'm not techie.

There's no rubbing going on is there? You'd probably see that the inside of your tyre is a mess if that was the case though.

I'm just throwing ideas around.

Thanks Phil, new front DRC shocks, valves etc in September. Tyres look good, no signs of adverse wear, suspension etc would need to be checked by Audi, geometry etc would need to be checked at a decent tyre outlet maybe. Thanks for the suggestions

I've had this problem for two years ,exactly same symptoms as pad125 including only occurring in wet,.Teesside Audi have looked at it seven times and changed cv joints and shocks but it is now worse than ever.My car is booked in again next week and I'm going to press them for a new rack as suggested by someone on here 3-4 days ago (the thread is called 'knocking when approaching full lock').Sorry can't send link as not computer literate!.Hope this helps and will tell Teeside that other cars have this prob as so far they have denied that it is a common fault

Thanks MrM, my local deal had 4 RS4's in today for the tech guy from Audi to road test them, all with the same clunking problem. I'll suggest the findings of the thread you mentioned and see if that will point them in the right direction.
