Is there life without Milltek? Alternatives?

Post by MEV » Fri Oct 16, 2009 2:13 pm

Hi

OK I know this might have been thrown about a bit in the past but I for one like to have a choice and tend to for something other than the norm on occasion... prob like most of us by the cars we drive! 8) … So I have been having a look about to alternatives to Miltek and there seems to be one or two that might cut it … Check this soundtrack out for GMG http://www.gmgracing.com/audi_exhaust_gmg_wcrs4.shtml Have to say that sounds the puppies!!! A lot more grunt and deep down growl than some others. Looks like they only make one option but that would work for me!! Based in the US but so ship internationally!

The MTM set up looks good IMO with the twin pipes but cost is high and limited on options available??

Whats the general thoughts from you guys who have purchased or heard alternatives in the flesh ?

I wondered how many were in the UK. Did you have it shipped? Love to see some photos etc and how does it compare to the Milltek in your opinion?

1, as far as I am aware...

Quality is out of this world, although (as with any, I am sure) its a bitch to fit straight!

Pics dont really do it justice as its the sound you buy it for, which, I have to say is preferable to the Milltek (but then I am biased)

Mev, so long caldy is still going to make it to the r/r day at Paramount it is worth having a listen to his AAS exhaust as well. I can vouch for their work too. Much deeper tone than a Milltek and a fraction of the cost too.

Graeme, do you think so?? When I spoke to Stuart a system was more money than a non valved Milltek. Granted the quality of there work is also better but unfortunately unless you are near them it's an expensive system to buy because you have to get there stay in a hotel for a night maybe 2 and all that adds up.

The GMG is a nice system and I can vouch for that, it's sounds amazing and the picture speak for it's self with regards to quality. You're looking at $1700 for the system and another $380 for shipping. right now they are on back order so you wont see one until the new year if you went that route.

Mike, another option (and bar far the cheapest) would be to either cut out the centre section of the standard system which will make the car louder or leave the system s is and dump the cats. If you do the cats you will need a remap but the 2 combined will give you as much as 40 BHP so worth thinking about.

I must day thats an expensive unit with the $ doing so well against the £ if only there was an after seller in the UK might give Milltek a run for thier money ! Jimbo, cheers for that nod sounds like a potential plan to consider but I would wonder if it would get through an MOT when its due? Either way would like to hear some other options pot at the RR day. Any one got the MTM twin ovals fittted? I did see one going through Newbury once Jim. Do you know him?

MEV, you should take a look at the Tubi also, I never tire of the sound it makes when it rumbles and you got WOT. I thought it was expensive compared to the others initially but having seen recent comments I don't think so and it is a fraction of the weight of the OEM. The other exhaust that has appeared recently is the Capristo which sounds very nice too.

Exhaust

I'm obviously biased but I did a fair bit of rooting around before going with AAS. The GMG doesn't work for me - those round silencers don't look right. Some 18 months ago when I did mine, the Tubi wasn't easy to source quickly. Ultimately I went with Stuart at AAS coz the quality is superb. Made from 304 stainless, 2.5" bore, 200 cell cats, X over pipe, large oval tips, fitted for £1550. This is much cheaper than Milltek's full system and it sounds superb.

Jim, when you say a system do you mean downpipes, cats and cat back? Like caldy, the quote I got for downpipes, 200CPSI cats, x-pipe and cat back using the OEM Valves all inclusive was £1650. The £100 extra over caldy's was for fitting the OEM valves rather than new tips.

Even with Grizz's disccount on a non resonated cat back at £650 you couldn't get equivalent Milltek sports cats for less than £1030 which is £1680 and then you wouldn't get an x-pipe as part of the kit. Yes it is not ideal for most in terms of location but the quality of workmanship is better and so is the sound and materials used. Oli can testify to that on my S4 when were were all at AMD when it was in Bicester for a r/r day.

Stuart will ship you a system if you don't want to come up to Newcastle for a fitting but then a night out on the Toon is hard to pass up.

Caldy do you have any photos of you set up bud? Sounds like an interesting alternative! Do they do a straight forward cat back like miltek or is it the full race set up only?

I kept the OEM system and replaced the cats with the 200C Miltek Cats and flow free downpipe. I will be putting her on the rollors in a few weeks so will let you guys know the out come. The system does sound like it has more grunt but with more of a rasp. I did have a full none-res-valved system before, im happy with the cats.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar
