seriously considering selling up ....

Plan on selling the V8 monster and moving to a new golf R20 which should be available next march.
I don't really want to but my warranty runs out next May and to extend the warranty for the high mileage i do would be £1700. That would be on top of my average yearly spend on the RS4 of £13.5K (fuel, insurance, tyres, servicing, maintenance)......

i figure the R20 would be a happy compromise with AWD, good acceleration and understated cool.
Obviously no RS4!! but the expenses will be significantly less and i'll have 3 yrs warranty.

Didn't realise they were planning such a thing. Looks great.

Better fuel economy than the RS4, and it sneaks in the £215 a year tax bracket :-)

Focus RS for grown ups?

Any idea how much it's going to be?

I've been thinking about this too (and got royally dissed on Pistonheads even considering moving from an RS4 to a Golf R).

All depends on the Golf R reviews once they start getting published, the new car depreciation hit (plus how much it will cost to spec up the Golf with sat nav, leather, parking sensors, etc) and getting my head around potential DSG issues (DSG would make sense in the suburbs but there's been a recall announced in the States due to faulty Mechatronics units).

Or maybe if you're after a good looking coupe, the Scirocco R?

Looks a bit to plain for me but gonna be a good car if its anything like the R32, just a shame you thinking of selling the RS4, these are mental machines. Peter

Price is estimated as £27-28k so i guess with sat nav, bluetooth and bigger 19inch alloys i'll be looking £31-32k....
Not cheap but they are only planning on selling 500 cars a yr so might hold value quite well?

Which is pretty much the same price as an S3. Which, looking at it, is sensible, as it basically seems to be the same car with a different badge!
Quick look at the Audi page for an S3 seems to suggest the same engine, gearbox, chassis, emissions, performance etc :-)
A wee bit of fettling and you'd be looking at 300hp with the difference in weight I'd reckon it'd not be too much slower than an RS4 either.

Does the golf look a bit fresher than an S3 though?

no, you may as well buy a MkV Golf Ed 30, which is the same engine as the S3 (i.e. tunable to 300+) only thing you lose is 4wd - but you're gonna have an extra £10k in your pocket

True. But I think unless it had a trick diff 300bhp could be a handful with only 2wd at the front.

The 10k would make a nice deposit for a new, more efficient RS4 if it comes though :D

sorry to hear you are thinking of selling up Justin.

I've come to the RS4 from the R32. Good fun cars but its a total step up in class sitting in the RS4, and although its a new car I think you will notice the difference if you move into a mk6 R32. It looks like a nice car but 30k for a hot hatch is big money..

As stated above, it will easily tune to over 300 bhp with that engine and be pretty quick. Having driven the S3 when I had the R32 all I can say was I was very disappointed with the power delivery and sound of the 2.0 turbo unit compared to my 3.2 V6. I realised then though that I prefer big n/a engines to turbo charged smaller engines. Might be worth driving a current s3 to see what the engine is like in terms of power delivery and sound and make sure your happy with it as they seem to be the same or very similar.

You are spending a lot on the RS4 a year though (13k +, thats incredible!). Just do the calculations to see what it would be like in the next car and if its worth the money. What about a 2nd car to do the miles on and keep the RS4???? (just another option)

I know quality wise this is another step down, but what about a new shape Impreza STI, they tune upto 380-400 bhp with a remap, filter and exhaust and that would be mighty quick and cheaper than the golf. all depends what you are after I guess. the golf would be a classier car than the subaru.

and you wouldn't need a giant brown paper bag to cover it when you're driving in public

Priyan thanks for the advice....
But.... I couldn't get a second economy car as a runabout because I'd never use it, I'd just take the RS4 every time! I think you're right about the S3 I should definately try one to see how the new R20 golf would be.....

I want to get a new car so I can get a fixed tyre/maintenance package.... I had this a few yr's back on my Mk5 gti and it saved me a fortune... I drive alot of fast/incredible A roads every day which I love BUT results in me eating tyres.... On average with the RS4 - set of tyres(all 4) every 6k miles.

I really really don't want to sell but I have had the RS4 for 2yrs (and loved every min especially with the milltek) but I need to reduce my expenses
