CV Joint

Post by SJRS4 » Tue Sep 08, 2009 12:06 pm

After missing the opportunity to extend the warranty on my car which ran out in June (IDIOT!) I have so far had 2 problems with it. The first was a cracked wheel bearing and the second has just occured.

Just going round a roundabout, grating noise, clunking noise, knocking sensation, no forward drive. The RAC guy reckons the offside front CV joint is to blame. The car is now with the stealer for their diagnosis and subsequent quote.

Not being mechanically minded I have no idea how long a CV joint is supposed to last. The car is a June 06 model with 34k on the clock. Is this something that is just 'one of those things' or is it unusual? It feels at the moment as though my car was built to last just over the 3 years and is now falling apart!

The steering rack tensioner can sometimes come loose, making a clunking sound when making turns or going over bumps, I had this same problem, was a 2 min fix, not sure about the CV joints
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

CV joints usually last a lot longer than 3 years or 34k miles - unless the rubber boot enclosing them gets damaged, when the grease lubricating the joint escapes and grit gets in. Both of these will cause a CV joint to fail prematurely.

I have had to have a CV boot replaced which was split and my car only had 40k miles on it. It is one of those parts that is designed well but because of whre it is if like Dave says it gets damaged, it can lead to issues.

Not an expensive repair IIRC albeit mine was under warranty but it comes as a kit replacing the joint and boot together.

As to what you are experiencing SJRS4, ditto and mine has been in since my warranty expired as the boot covering the nearside shock had split causing a clunking when going over the most minor of bumps and one of the new exhaust actuators I had replaced under warranty is squeeking.

The former was done under goodwill and the latter has been fixed although I suspect temporarily by it being lubed up but likely that I will et another back box soon under parts warranty.

The long and short is that there are things that will go wrong, most will be wear and tear so a warranty wouldn't cover them anyway!

Thanks for all your your advice guys.

The stealer has been on the phone and confirmed that it is the offside front CV joint that's gone. It's going to be around £280 to put right so not as bad as I thought!

Just to let you know I had my two front cv joints changed under warranty on my last service. They were clunking during cornering. I have an 07 with 27000 on it.
