Bluetooth - handset(s) will not connect car

Hi, have owned my RS4 for over 2wks now and have not managed to connect my phone handset to Bluetooth.
I have a Nokia 6301. Have tried Samsung D600 and also my wife's Nokia (can't remember her model no.).

I can always "find" the car but when I go to connect it fails..

Audi say the car will only work with certain handsets and then start going on about software in the phone.. I'm not sure whether to believe this, I thought Bluetooth was, well "Bluetooth"!
My old 350Z had no problems with connecting with my phone, and my wife's Peugeot 207, the same.

Any ideas, appreciate some advice?

Nick

Does it ask you for an authorisation pin when you go to connect through the handset?

I've just connected a Blackberry Bold with no issues whatsoever. Also, on some phones you have to enable them to be discovered?

PG, yes it does. The handbook suggests the pin is 1234. I get that far and for a split second it says "connecting" but then says "failed".

The phone is enabled already as I used to connect to my old car automatically without issues. Or am I missing something. I would have thought 3 different types of handset failing to connect would point towards a problem with the car.
It's going in for some minor warranty work in a couple of weeks and I've added the bluetooth problem to the list. If Audi can demonstrate that a handset I've not tried yet works on the car then I'll be happy to look into changing mine..

It is difficult to know as I cannot remember the entire list of compatible handsets, but yes what you suggest may well be the case.

If anyone knows the list of suitable phones could they post it? Im about to change my nokia n95 for something that i like AND will work properly in the RS,a real bonus would be being able to get a cradle aswell, ive got used to the nokia and fancied the n97 but orange tell me all the n series are renown for dropping there bluetooth connection!

Are they? early ones were, but all the latest N series are fine.

Only problem is the age of your BT module in the car, only the latest ones fully sync with the N series.

Q modules work ok, but require the contacts downlod manager to be installed
S, N & AA modules all work fine with the XM5800 and N96, N97

IIRC the 8GB version of the N95 doesn't need the Nokia Contacts Manager installed (which you get from the Nokia website), but it might be worth installing it anyway since it won't cause any harm.

But as craigyb has already said the N95 does need a pretty recent version of the Bluetooth module - maybe your problem is that the Bluetooth module in your car is too old to support the N95?

The reply from Orange is just bullsh*t, the non-technical idiot you spoke to is referring to the WCDMA/3G frequency of 2.1GHz - which has nothing at all do to with Bluetooth problems.

It is under the dash on the passneger side, a pretty easy glovebox module out job as there are 4 screws IIRC holding it in place.

ONLY if it's a retrofitted module...

Factory fitted Bluetooth modules are in a plastic box under the carpet under the drivers seat.

The easiest way to see the version letter on a factory fitted module is with VAG-COM.

The N95 and 8GB models do need the download manager, the N96/97/XM5800 seem to work ok with the later modules.

Oh well, mine must have been retrofitted as that is where it is, but then the car has always had the module from the factory (supposedly) so not sure why?
