I am considering an RS4 Avant (Used to own a saloon) and am very keen to know if the Avant will accept a Mountain Bike through the tailgate. :?:

DON'T DO IT !!!!!

No gaurantee it will fit as bikes are all different sizes. Are you talking a down hill rig or a small framed XC hardtail?

I have put mine in the back a couple of times. Even with both wheels off I have to be VERY carefull as the peddles / forks etc can leave permanent impressions in the rear carpet. You will mess up the door trim or worse scratch the bumber or something if you do this regularly. No matter what you do the bike will move about in the back.

The only regular option for me is Thule roof racks. Which I have used on all my Avants for over 6 years. With no problems. That's my previous B5 S4, B5 RS4 and now my B7 RS4.

I have a saloon and use Saris Bones 3 bike rack... http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Saris ... 360009223/

It would work on the (granddad)avant too!

You can even colour co-ordinate the rack to your bike ;)

Bloody hell, I had to think a bit to figure that one out Marcus...

Like Golich, I've just got a couple of Thule Pro-ride 591's for the roof with adaptors for both vehicles.

I very quickly got fed up of sticking dirty bikes in the car...

Ive got a Saris Bones 3 aswell for my Avant - sits well on the back and looks the part. You need to watch the feet dont scratch the bumpers - mines a black Avant so shows up any marks! The audi boot mat helps in this respect as it has a drop out portion that protects the bumper.

That said, Ive managed to get bikes in the back of the car and have found the bootmat works a treat to stop the bike moving around. With the rear seats down Ive managed to get my bike (Spesh Full Susser) in the back with both wheels still in tact. Most places i go have decent facilities for washing down the bike after a good session, so the dirt isnt a major issue.

The roof bars are for the kayaks!!!
