Happening in a FSI engine near you...now!

Post by pippyrips » Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:47 pm

There has been a lot of talk recently about about a potential problem with build up in the inlet manifolds of the new generation FSI engines.

I'm not sure further proof is needed in proving our (and all other FSI) engines have a potential Achilles heal after recent threads but just in case, this is what was lurking inside my inlet manifold:

The car has 19,000 on the clock with full Audi service history.

Audi - your comments please....

How long to get your manifold off, and have you cleaned it now?

Rob, how often do you use your car? Is it a occassional / weekend driver, a weekday commuter or an everyday user?

Graham,

Up until very recently used every day. Work commute (always fully warm before switching off) and opened up when roads allow.

The car 390.9bhp at Surrey Rolling Road ok Saturday, pretty much as good as Charlie has seen. Could this be where the missing 24bhp are?!

Horrible! Have seen in Demon Tweeks mag an oil breather catch tank that collects all the oil vapour that would normally feed back into the inlet manifold, lets it condense and when full just empty. All we need to find is the oil breather pipe to the inlet manifold and connect up. anybody seen or have any feedback on this?

Pippyrips,
Sorry to see that, but honestly, it doesn't surprise me one bit. There is simply too much oil vapor in the crankcase air for the cyclonic separators to handle (no matter how the car is driven - daily commuter, track car, whatever...). Doesn't Wynn's have a fuel treatment as well that would at least clean the injectors and combustion chambers? Might as well change your plugs too, they are certainly mucked up.

Have no fear silver, all under control :)

Wynns do make an fsi cleaning product, (I've got some in the shed!) however i didn't use it before the manifold was opened up as I wanted to show the true state of the inside. I may well use the wynns product to try and stop buildup from happening again once cleaned along with a.n. other method yet to be confirmed.

Very interesting stuff, looking forward for your findings so I can follow. Every photo of the cleaning process will be greatly appreciated, since at the end of May I'll be going to Neckarsulm for a 2 year complete service and I want to discuss this problem directly with Quattro GmbH people, if they would leasten of course.

Hi Rob, just curious why did you take out your inlet manifold? Was there any problem or symptoms which led you to take them out for inspection/cleaning? Thanks.
