I've always maintained (with the help of my arse dyno) that the s button makes a noticeable difference in performance, even if the out and figures are still the same.

It's worth noting I run a non valved system so all the difference I notice is down to throttle responce.

Question: I always thought that the S button opened the exhaust flaps 'all the time'. Is it true that it only opens them at idle, and only 'sometimes' at higher revs? If so, wouldn't a permanent flap-defeat keep the flap open all the time?

This was discussed some time ago but afaik, in s-mode, the flaps will open at idle and again when the engine goes beyond 3500rpm. And yes, you can defeat this by doing a simple mod of plugging the vacumm hose and voila..your flaps will open all the time regardless of s mode or not, at all rev range.

Park somewhere confined and you can hear the valves open at idle then close as you rev the engine.

IIRC in Sport mode the valves stay closed until 3500rpm in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but are open at all revs in 4th, 5th & 6th - which you can hear when driving.

So up to 20% throttle, you get LESS torque with Sport engaged? Never knew that...

As it's requested torque, not delivered, you presumably could actually get any shape you wanted including 100% output from only 1% input. Audi must have chosen the Sport mode curve to preserve driveability.
