Frequency of oil changes

Post by MrM » Wed Dec 10, 2008 9:33 pm

Is it recommended to change the oil and filter more frequently than the variable service intervals which will be about 15k miles in my case - seems a long time for the oil to be in an engine of this nature.
How much do dealers charge for an intermediate oil change
Cheers

1. Yes, the engine contaminates the oil with petrol
2. £250 inc oil

Is that for Sunflower oil? Best I manage for Titan is about £100 for 12L (Opie with forum and coupon discount) - it leaves me the 2L spare, but there's the filter etc. on top...

The £250 includes VAT, labour and all items necessary, just for the avoidance of doubt

Filter from VAGparts for GBP18.82+VAT, genuine Castrol Edge from E-bay for GBP76 for 10 litres.

Would love to know how to get it all for the 82 quid...

You are joking arnt you, you can buy decent oil for much less than what the dealer will charge, in my B5 S4 i got 8l of Edge Sport 10w60 for £58 from halfords with trade card.

Where's the joke? I'm paying £100 (actually £93 plus carriage) for 12L of a slightly better oil - Titan GT1 5w30 rated to VAG 504.00 / 507.00

You used to pay £87 for the same amount (if £58 was for 8L) of Edge, and that was trade...

Agree that dealers charge way more, but I'm not using one

Thing is RS4 takes ~10L inspite of what the handbook says....

£100 for 12L of Titan Fuchs @ Opie Oils, take it down to my local specialist and I get the whole schebang done for £149.

And without starting the whole oil debate again, even oils that meet the correct VW spec demonstrate significant variance in their chemistry after a few thousand miles in a FSI engine.

You can search the forums for data to back that conclusion up.

I'm going by what it cost me to do my RS B5. £37x2 for 8litres of shell helix and £7.70 for a genuine filter and sump plug. £250 is still take the mickey for a B7 IMO. Buy your own oil and take it to a normal garage, rather than have the dealers make you look stupid!

Whatever good oil you use, change it often, I do mine every 4k miles odd (+ or - 1k).

I totally agree, I change mine every 5000 km. I now use Castrol SLX 3 Long Life 5W30. Some of my friends use Castrol Edge 0W40. What do you guys think I should use?

You should use ANY oil that meets the VW spec listed in the service handbook.
