Front discs and pads

Morning all.

After taking my car in to the local stealer recently in an attempt to have them cure the squealing/graunching noise that occurs when I brake (it sounds like I'm driving a ruddy bus!), I was informed that the front pads were 85% worn and that they felt the discs should also be replaced.

The cost for this was quoted as £1023. Is this roughly what everyone else has experienced? I don't mind paying for something if it's a fair price but I just thought I'd check first. Is there any reason that this has to be done by Audi i.e. warranty or could it be done by a specialist?

Thanks chaps.

Yes, from a Stealer, source and fit the parts independently for a cheaper result. A second opinion is never a bad thing either....

I got a quote from VAG Parts this morning on some new pads and discs for my B7 RS4 brake setup (on a B5 S4):

Pads: £185.97 + VAT + shipping (full set, 8 pads)
Discs: £259.32 + VAT + shipping (for each disc)
Total (incl. VAT + shipping): ~£840

Thankfully I only need pads but fitting the whole lot yourself looks like it'll save you almost £200 (if the price you were quoted include the labour?).

How many miles has the car done on these discs and pads?

I just spoke to our local VAG parts trade centre. They came back with the discs at £292.21+VAT each and Pads at £187.36+VAT. We could supply and fit these at £995 all in.

Rob, any special tools or procedure, just so I know - thanks

From memory - no. Decent toolkit and perhaps some good allen/star keys to remove the bolts that retain the pads.

Andy, the car has done a little over 26,000 miles on the current discs and pads but only 8,000 with me at the wheel.

Thanks for the quote. I might be interested in having these fitted, whereabouts are you based?

Guys, thanks very much for all the advice, much appreciated.

I'm definitely not going to attempt to fit the parts myself as I wouldn't have enough confidence in the job I'd done to drive the car like I do now!

Does anyone know of a good independent Audi specialist in the Notts/Derby area?

Klauster - how did you get warranty replacements??!!

My fronts were knackered at 11,000 miles and I (well company) had to pay. Fault of OEM pads which groove the discs is you let them wear to the pad warning light. I think that's a design fault, but Audi didn't.
