Checked the oil yesterday when the car was cold, was in the "top up if you want to" section on the stick so I topped it up so that the level was right up to the bottom of the bulge which says "MAX".
Checked it again today when engine was warm and it is half way up that bulge with the max word on it
Will it do any damage?
Cheers
Bloody cars

As they say, you should have read the procedure in the manual first .. but to help you ... you should get away with this, but it can cause problems stuffing excessive oil ... just take it easy for a while ...

Mate i may be pointing out the obvious but i forget sometimes and scare myself, but you are checking the oil on a level surface! because it makes a huge difference

Yes, level surface.
Guess I didn't wait long enough for the oil I put in to find its way to the sump.
Can't understand why the handbook says to check while warm, always done while stone cold before to make sure all the oil has run back into the sump.

the oil expands when it is hot so increases the capacity.

Cheers, so will it do any damage?
There is no blue smoke so I guess it is not being burnt.

Hi,
Got a question about that. in the manual it's written...to check, just drive a bit then stop and wait two minutes to check the oil level...
so do we have to wait for an oil temp of 70 degrees or doing that after two minutes when the engine is not really hot?
Thanks for answering

I read the instructions as - drive (however you like/for however long you like- but get the engine up to temp i.e over 65 degrees) then stop leave for 2mins, then check oil

The morning after my last service I checked the oil when the car was stone cold and it was right on MAX. So I always check when engine is cold as I find the dipstick tricky to read when oil is warm and get inconsistent readings.Hope this helps.

Took the car into my local dealers Huntingdon Audi

yesterday morning without a booking and was on my way again in less than 40 minutes which included two cups of coffee.
They drained 0.5 litre out which took the level to about three quarters up the stick so my guess is I had overfilled by about 0.25 litre - anyone know if this may have caused damage?
I could see the car in the workshop through the window in the waiting room so I know they also checked the tyre pressures/tread depth and visually inspected them, checked all over the underside and filled the washer bottle. Also road tested.
When I came to pay I was pleasantly surprised to be told there was no charge which I thought was very good of them.

Bloody hell now thats what I call service, they sound very keen at there Job I like dealers like that, instead of the normal mongos you get in most dealerships these days!
