I've had my RS4 for a couple months now (about 4k miles) and recently hit the rev limiter in second gear at 7500 rpm. Is this normal? Anyone else experience this?

No that's not normal. I hit the rev limiter within the first week.

Are you sure it was 7500rpm?

Don't forget that the rev limiter is reduced to 7000rpm until the oil temperature reaches 60 Celsius (don't know what that is in Fahrenheit) when it increases to 8250rpm.

I hit the 8250rpm rev limiter most days, and it always surprises me when the engine hasn't fully warmed up on a cold day and it hits the limiter early at 7000rpm.

Just watch the bottom line of the DIS - when the oil is below 60 Celsius it says "Max 7000rpm", but when the oil reaches that it shows an oil can symbol and shows the oil temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit depending on how the instruments are coded.

Damn... guess I should take my eyes off the road more often to catch all the cool stuff I'm apparently missing!!

Do you truly go up to 7000rpm when the engine is still cold ?

I try not to, but occasionally on cold days when I get to a roundabout near the M27 where the engine is normally warm it hasn't got over 60 Celsius. Probably no more than once a month...

Thats what i was thinking! - i don't go above 3.5k before i see 65+

Hit the rev cut off tonight at about 8000rpm, power suddenly dropped off. Got a bit over zealous with a super seven. I am not a techi so wondered if this may have affected the car in some way. I am almost sure that it won't have as the cut off is there to stop exactly that. But though I would ask as it is the first and last time hopefully.

Don't worry - the rev limiter is there to stop the revs going too high to cause any problem, some chip companies raise the limiter to 8400rpm.

Enjoy the sound of a V8 doing 8000+rpm - it's addictive!
