Anyone tried it against a Merc SLK 55 AMG

Post by Jezzer » Mon Jul 28, 2008 4:17 pm

Just wondered if my RS4 B7 Avant is a bit slow as I got trounced by a Merc SLK 55 AMG out of a roundabout yesterday.
Okay I was four up with a combined passenger weight of 50 stone (318kgs) where he was two up but only small people about 20 stone (128 kgs combined. We were level going about 30 mph, I was in third gear and his sounded like the autobox had kicked down. My tank was half full.

The Merc is 360 BHP but lighter and the power to weight ratio compared to the RS4 is very similar. Should I accept that with all the weight my RS was carrying this was bound to have happened, just seemed like I was going backwards. Any thoughts?

Surely 2nd gear would have given you a bit more of a chance??

Maybe, although I didn't want to lose time changing down just wanted to plant my foot on the gas pedal.

What the hell were you doing in 3rd at 30mph????

2nd is good for ~70mph.

I'd shift down to 2nd at anywhere up to 50mph in this type of drag especially loaded up against a supercharged car. You haven't got the torque to compete...

Remember the B7 doesn't make any power until 5000+rpm...even then its probably still only making 250hp which many cars make these days...

I wouldn't think twice about giving any SL(K) 55 a run for its money but a SL65.....hmmm....

Saying something when you have to thrash your RS4 through the gears just to keep up.
Had my RS4 2 months and traded it yesterday for a Porsche as I found the Rs4 over rated too slow, boring and rattly. Keep defending the car but reality is its a disapointment on the B5.

Let me guess, your Porsche has a turbo or two?

The only Porsche's that are faster than the B7 have turbos (with one notable exception which is often double the price), so if you haven't, you must have bought a slower car!

It never fails to amaze me that for some people changing gears is such an effort...so much so they'll condemn a car as a result...

A 535d will kick an M5's ass if you don't work it through the gears...

The B7 is still one of the fastest 4dr saloons around, with arguably an Evo VIII and/or a M5 giving it a run for its money. Make it a wet surface and one of those cars just can't compete...

Throw it a class leading interior and thats what most people appreciate about the car.

Porsche haven't got a patch on Audi in terms of their interiors....

Absolutely right. My mistake.

I was thinking of the SL 55.

Apologies.

before the RS4 , i had an SLK 55AMG , slighty modified for 2years and 35k miles.. My comments on speed only would be:

Merc is quicker 0 - 70 , due to rear wheel drive, and auto box good at offthe line starts. In gear is quick 2 as a prod of the pedal gets a double downshift, even if you arent in manual mode to do it yourself. torque was massive 380 ft/lb plus.... After 70mph my opinion is the RS4 is quicker..

This is in the dry :) add wet weather, or handling, or brakes etc and i beleive the RS4 has it

Whatever you do don't try an SL65 a friend of mine had one before HER F430 and she absolutely left me for dead - we went for it from about 50 upwards, it was not far off the SLR I had a play with in France for a laugh.

I think I mentioned in a previous post on another thread (http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... ic&t=71931), sometimes you know when you're beaten....

Each to their own I suppose. Porsche, impractical, poor warranty, steep depreciation and flawed dynamics which means they have been trying to perfect it for 40 years. IMO of course.

Surely something negative could be said about evey car?

You are also missing the point of the RS4, hence why it has a high revving V8.

Don't know many Porsche bar GT2/3 and Turbo that can really get away from an RS4 when they are trying. And how far are they going to get unless on a track. To the next set of red traffic lights or traffic queue a few seconds quicker?

don't agree with the warranty quote about porsches i never had any problems and wish i could buy a warranty for the rs4 every year until its 10 year old for only £825 a year including europe assistance, and that would relieve a lot of my concerns about drc. Regards depreciation i'm pretty sure that as a percentage nearly every porsche would be worth more than rs4's eg £50k ish now worth £35k for 2 year old (rough estimates as example only!) and carrera S was £72k now worth low 60's.
wait for it......
