Car is almost 15 months old and the variable indicator was showing another 1500 miles to first service but as the car was at the dealer having a couple of other things sorted I decided to go ahead and get the first service done.

Now I was expecting the variable service indicator to be reset and I would be ok for another yearish. Instead I have a sticker on the windscreen telling me that it needs servicing agin on it;s second birthday or 7000 miles?

Is this right? Sounds odd but before I go and ask the dealer wondered when the scheduling was for anyone else who had completed there first one.

For sure a bit weird

You are supposed to have 2 options:
- variable service based on computation (requires VW504.00 oil and may be VW503.01). It can extend up 30 000Kms
- fixed service: usually with lower grade oil (VW502.00). It is expected to happen more often (15000Kms ?)
You can always swap from one mode to the other one. It has to be selected on the computer of the car during the service.

One question: are you based in US ?
Because for Porsche, I heard of more often oil changes than elsewhere. I did not get a clear explanation way but it sounded like a mix of the kind of oil usually found and the will to avoid any kind of issue if people go over the limit.
I would not be surprised that other brands apply "the same trick"

When mine went in the variable service was reset, the sticker left in my window just said when it needed to go in for a brake fluid change.

That's not right - whether they've left it on AVS or set it to fixed servicing.

AVS = 2 years or 20,000 miles max, reducing based on driving style and habits.

Fixed = 1 year or 10,000 miles.

The only reason for a service (and it's a very good one) is to have the brake fluid changed.

IMHO they've put the wrong data on the sticker, and MAY have put the wrong data into the instruments too!

Sorted .. the sticker should not have been put on there and the AVS takes 300 miles to compute so hopefully that explains it!

AVS should be blank until it has recalculated. If it's showing a time/distance it's still not right.
