Carbon scoop oil intake

Post by tartan_rob » Wed Apr 02, 2008 1:10 pm

Well finally got around to it and have a mold to re-produce if enough interest. Bear in mind it is the first one I have done and I haven't finished it off. I just wanted to see if the things works - and it does. Below about 70 the oil temp is similiar to before but it recovers much quicker. Above this (and a lot above this) the temp actually drops off. On a private track I started at 80 and 97degC and by the time I had got to 120 and held it for 10 seconds or so the temp had dropped to 95degC. I have a slight mod to make but it would appear to do the job.

Answers on a postcard....? If enough interest I am going to sell it through VAG Parts as they have shown an interest.

It has been more time consuming than the std flat replacement I did the other week.

Tartan Rob I find this really interesting as my car is running, in my optinion, a bit hotter on the oil temp than it should be.

How is the clearance? (I have already scuffed my OEM one). How much would you be looking to sell for? Is it easy to fit?

The clearance is obviously less than std as the std part is flush but it is not excessive, it adds about 20-30mm.

This unit replaces the std one and come's prep'd but not drilled as the hole position varies ever so slightly between cars. So at worse case you have to drill a few holes in it and use the std screws to screw it in or I could drill it and then it is just an unscrew/screw job (I could even provide new screws). I will be working on getting a finished article to VAG-Parts at the weekend, I'll take some photo's for you guys at the same time.

On the car wash, no need, Audi did it for me this morning - i was saving it for them...

If this scoop really does decrease oil temps (or rather allow them to recover quicker) and im not for one second saying it does'nt why did Audi not think of this quite basic mod?
How does it effect Drag and Downforce etc? Have you had it tested in a wind tunnel or are we talking assumptions?

I suspect Audi did not have this std due to the ground clearance or some guy in the drawing office thought it did not look right. Without someone being in the drawing office at the time, I suppose we will never know. I could ask why you bothered with a remap? If it is so much better, why did Audi not do it from the start?

Wind tunnel...? Are you having a laugh? The same kind of wind tunnel that F1 teams spend millions on?

It is gut feeling on my part and real figures from my testing. If people don't want it, don't buy it. Simple as.

I chose a remap so that the engine performed more to my liking not because it was better. The remap comes with drawbacks (reduced engine longevity, increased fuel consumption and poorer emissions to name but a few) which i accept and i do not consider that to be a better product than what Audi produced from the start.

The std lip is like so for a reason, im just curious as to what your lip really does?

What sort of money are we talking here?

I hate to say, if my dealer ever washes my car, they will get a £500 bill ......Have a look at your car in the sun, and you will see what I am getting at ...

t_urbo: How can you quantify that your remap will decrease engine longevity? and Are you really that bothered about poorer emmissions and fuel economy?
