I got bored yesterday....

I got bored and decided to copy the front splitter that directs air into the oil cooler.

I have yet to drill the holes but it all fits fine and for those interested in the weight, it is about 1/2 the weight as the original and about 2-3 times more rigid thereore no need for the extra supports.

In between doing other bits I'm going to create one that scoops air into the cooler and creates a 'mouth'.

First pic shows original in place. 2nd shows original splitter and new carbon one. It looks grey in the picture but it does have the normal carbon black look.

Thoughts and opinions?

Looks a good copy Rob, however does the OEM weigh that much in the first place? And do you think it will make that much more of a difference for the cost involved?

Impressed to say the least! I would like to know how to produce things in CF? What is the process?

The reason being is that I want to have a go at (or even buy  ) CF versions of the plastic covers in the engine bay.

I thought of just using fake CF film but that would just look too tacky.

This version is really cosmetic, the "scoop" version will be excellent for cooling and at a price of just over £100 should be good value. You are spot on about the weight, its "baw hairs" differance but is done for the cosmetic appearance - apart from the scoop version.

Once I have got the B5 S/RS inlet manifold sorted, I going to work on one for the B7RS. Have even thought about a custom manifold for a SC, it would be much cheaper than MTM one and a tad lighter....

On the CF "How to" question, if you are serious then you are best to get yourself onto a course. Then you'll have to shell out about £3k to get enough tools together to do the job + you'll need a garage to turn into a workshop. Materials are a horrific cost or for pre-preg they are. If you are doing cold curing, it is much cheaper but forget about the finish. Finally you need time. The plug for the B5 manifold I am working on has taken me about 5 weeks. I only now starting to take some moulds from it....

Nice work, been wondering when smeone might do this. Everytime I wash the car I look at that and think, gee that would look good in CF.

Im interested especially if it improves cooling and is lighter!

If you were to sell these, what sort of price are we looking at ?

It is likely to be in the £100 region with the scoop version being more like £130/140 but to be honest I haven't worked out the costs.

I was going to make a few and stick them on ebay to see what kind of interest I get. MRC may and VAGParts and very likely to retail them for me as well. Then I'll be able to gauge interest better.

I'd definately be up for one as well.

Add me to the list if you start one.

Ditto, if you start a list. I like the sound of the functional one.

Thanks

Looks like a top quality piece of work.

One small note of caution. Given that the purpose of a splitter is to "modify" the airflow under the car, is there a danger that by incorporating a scoop. you could have unanticipated effects on the airflow, and possible alter the high speed handling characteristics.

Just to say that I'm no aerodynamicist and am not trying to "dis" your work in any way, but I thought I'd ask !!!

Hi Robbo, non taken at all. If you look under the car, although a lot of it has flat surface there are too many breaks and areas of no cover (such as suspension and drivetrsain tunnel etc). I don't think this would make any difference to stability on our cars but I will be testing at high speed first before selling to anyone. I think this refers to ultra high end cars (McLaren F1, SLR etc) and pure performance/race cars.

Guys, take a look at www.rsquattro.com. It is run by a very friendly Belgian guy called Youry Bioul, and he has been selling these very items for a while now. Mine are in the post ;0)
