what does "56" mean?

This is part of UK registrations, 56 tells us the age of the car. With it being an 07 56 it means the car was registered between 1st January 2007 and 28th February 2007.
Registrations in the Uk are twice annually. 1st March to 31st of August are shown by a zero followed by the last digit of the year. For example, an April 2007 registered car would be an 07.
The second registration runs from 1st September til 28th February of the following year. These are shown by a 5 (being half of 10, meaning half way through the year) followed by the final digit of the year. However, this is the confusing bit, if the car was registered in January or February of the new year, it uses the last digit of the previous year.
For example a february 1st 2007 car becomes a 2007 56 registration and a september 1st 2006 car becomes a 2006 56 registration.
In the trade all 0x plates have the same value although with 5x registrations the value of the car varies dependant on whether it was registered before or after the new year.
