RS4 v's M3, why I chose the RS4...

I've just replaced my BMW E46 M3 with a 6,000 mile RS4, here's why... I'd owned my M3 from new, 4 years and 71,000 miles. Loved the car, perfect in every way but time for something newer, still in warranty and faster! I would have bought a new M3 however I was put off by several factors. 1. Looks, subjective I know but not as 'butch' as the RS4. 2. Driving involvement. I borrowed a test car from both BMW and my local dealer so I had genuine everyday use in all types of driving. The M3 is fast, handles well, has great ride but it's really not INVOLVING in its feedback. It's like a faster 335i and not a proper M car. 3. Engine, not as torquey as RS4 and produces its power much higher up the rev range so needs to be driven like a Honda type R for rapid progress. 4. Noise, the lack of... 5. 'i drive', absolutely hate it! 6. Interior not as classy as RS4. 7. No 4 door option yet.
I'm delighted with my RS4, it's perfect although I've had to ditch my previous slightly sideways driving style due to 4wd and although the handling, grip and looks are first class due to sports suspension I do find it a bit firm and bouncy on anything other than smooth roads. I may offer it later on this forum to anyone who wants to exchange it for standard dampers and springs.
So until there's an M3 csl 4 door, I'm happy!

idrive is too complicated and requires about 5 actions for everything a button would do...

Yeah, the new M3 is a dud. However have you thought about a C63 AMG? It will blow the RS4 into the weeds in all departments.

Go away you PENIS!!!!!!!!!! You really ought to get a life and go back to playing with your matchbox cars as I believe you are about 8 years old.

Welcome BTCC-MAN, Although I didn't own a E46 M3, I had 2 consecutive days drive in one on a track as part of their driver training and when I got back into my RS4 which I had for about 1 month, what a difference it was, it's like upgrading from business to first class flight. The RS4 has more comfy, luxury interior and yet more powerful than the M3. Don't get me wrong, the E46 M3 is a nice car but the RS4 is definitely much better. Can't really say much about the new M3 but the fact that it has no 4 doors, it's out of the question. Regards.

Not so much with the M3 but my 3 months old X5 E70's I-drive system has been freezing every few days. Finally got a software update yesterday to fix the problem which is apparently quite common on X5s.

If I had the luxury to I would also like all three, they all have unique talents. And the four door M3 saloon is now on the BMW configurator. Still wouldn't change from my RS4 though, not even if the touring became available.
A cheap C63 Estate however, that would ask serious questions of my loyalty to Audi. Bigger, torquier and v.agressive looks, mmmm........

Well, the E46 is 5 years older, has 2 less cylinders and one liter less displacement it was also much cheaper to begin with. Can't really compare them. The fact that EVO prefered the E46M3CS to the RS4 is a testament to the genius of that model.
