Does anyone know whether the gear knob just unscrews to remove it - or is it more complicated? Thanks

no idea but just have a go - whats the worst than can happen!

If it is a screw off knob it will give way before you start applying enough pressure to break things. Every car i have owned has been twist off.

One of these perhaps??!!

Out of curiosity, what are you wanting it off for??

I don't think it does after seeing the gear shifer assembly without the gear knob fitted; there is no screw thread on the shaft. I think there must be a grub screw on the gear knob facing the dashboard.
