It takes some loading off the starter motor and no doubt some Health and Safety Law plays or will play a part in it.

Didn't know this. The old dear always starts her golf with the clutch in but couldn't explain why she does it. I guess she just knows better!!

There was a discussion about this a while back that got quite heated!
The root cause is the law suits against Audi in the US over 20 years ago when some dork tried to start his manual transmission car with it in gear and injured someone - the US courts blamed Audi instead of the incompetent driver. To avoid that happening they started making the starter motor only work when the clutch pedal is engaged on US model cars.
The benefit of reducing the load on the starter motor by dis-engaging the clutch and hence removing the load of the gearbox is especially noticeable on cold mornings when the gearbox oil is REALLY thick.
On the RS4 there's another good reason for pressing the clutch pedal ... try just tapping the "Start" button for a fraction of a second .....the starter motor will go through a complete start cycle until the engine starts taking several seconds, you DON'T need to hold the button down!

I can't imagine how many garage doors would be wrecked without it then!!

Cheers.
Soon you will have to fill out an on board Risk Assessment before the car will start, bloody joke. Still only got ourselves to blame.
Still would like to override it though if at all possible.

I totaly agree with the RA stuff but when I was taught to drive, it was banged into me to depress the clutch for the two reasons above - safety, just in case it's been left in gear and it does indeed take the load of the engine. Mind you, that was in the days when most of the cars I would have driven would have been 6V, dynamo and side valve so the battery needed every chance it could get.

Are you talking about the coding options 1? its adaptation +16.
If so ive tried this but when you put the new code it keeps reverting back to its original code for some reason, so i was not sure if this is the right adaptaion code.

If you checkout the wiring diagrams (see the Bentley manuals) you'll see that no amount of coding with VAG-COM will change the fact that the clutch switch is wired in series with the starter button!
