Discs & Pads Questions??

Car is going into the dealers tomorrow for new front Pads & possibly new Discs, as i'm getting vibration through the steering when braking hard, so i think i may have warped the front discs slightly in Germany a few weeks back :o Will ask to see the discs in case it's just uneven pad wear that's causing the vibration as i've no intention of replacing the discs if not needed.

The brake warning lamp has not illuminated yet, but they do look well below 20% life left from a visual glance.

My 3 questions are? roughly what's the dealer cost for supply & fit of new front pads & discs?? & secondly does anyone know the biaise of front/rear braking?? I'd like to know roughly what life span rears will provide in relation to fronts? Lastly, what is the normal lifespan of front & rear pads & front & rear discs??

Cheers in advance.

Disc's do not warp, what actually happens is that a small amount of pad gets left behind on part of the disc and creates an uneven surface hence possible vibration, if you tracked the car then left the handbrake on after then you might get this.

Rear pad wear is down to rear loading.

Is that what happens? Hmm, maybe the discs I had on my VR6 golf had build-up then, strange though cos there was no actual build up of different coloured material on them :D They were shaped almost like a pringle though!!

Hi Paul,

my local dealer quoted me £440 inc vat and Labor to fit new disc and pads on the front and £300 inc vat and labor for the rears. wouldn't give me any idea on wear time though as down to driving style.

hope that helps mate

Jim

I killed my discs after going to the ring too.
however i had told the dealer i was going there, so they said wear and tear = i paid.
if they are not aware of the track use, claim normal driving and demand warranty work..
also get the brake fluid checked, mine bolied and was useless with the new discs and pads.

my pads were £300 and the discs £600 ish from memory..

my second set were also shagged after my second ring trip and I am to get these replaced FOC is mentioned above.

Steve

Like I said, couldn't see any different coloured material on the discs but they were definately worn and were definately not as straight as they should have been. :D

If the discs are worn, then its wear & tear, regardless of where the car was used, surely ?

The 'warped discs' debate has been around for ever. They can and do 'warp/bend/whatever term you want to use', no matter what StopTech say on their website. Pick up on the discs is more common than 'warping' in high performance setups though, which the RS4/RS6 setup is.

Stoptech's not the only one.

It seems to me that there are plenty that will say they do warp but then again they would because their trying to sell the bloody things.
