K & N filter

I know this has been listed before but I can,t find it.
Is it worth putting a K&N air filter in the RS4?.

Hi audijohn,
I have a K&N pannel filter in mine.I always fit one to my cars and I am happy with it.There is no noticeable difference as in any kind of power increase but I think is has increased the exhaust noise.
RS4 B7 saloon,
Sprint Blue,

I pod socket,In dash multi cd.
Supaglass smoked tinted glass

I'd be interested in doing this too. Was there a thread some time back about the AFM being damaged by oiled filters? Is the K+N oiled?

Many thanks for the info, it is not TOO noisey is it?.
Have you openned perminantly the exaust flaps by blocking the vacuum pipe?, as this gives a shall amount of noise.

Alex I think this is total c*ap to be honest, many of my mates have used these filters on many cars with NO problems.

I fitted the filter several months ago with no problems so far.I do not believe the maf sensor/oil cloging problems.I have always fitted the k&n filter to my previous cars and never had a problem.I have also done the mod/exhaust flaps a week ago and I notice a slight increase in torque low down teh rev range.

Hi Hugy,
My K&N filter just arrived last week. I was told as a safe precaution, I am going to clean it first and just "lightly" oil it. As long as there isn't too much oil applied, there shouldn't be any issue with the MAF. But I am just going to install it as is. I've used K&N filters in my previous cars and had no issue with the MAF either.
Just wondering if you could help me though, I had a look but not sure how to get to the filter box without breaking any parts. The RS4 looks a bit tricky to remove the parts. Can you give me a guide to to replace the oem panel to the K&N one? Photos would be awesome if it's not too much trouble. Thanks heaps.

Hi OZRS4.Its quite an easy job,takes about ten minutes.When you open the bonnet there are two small black screws on the left where the black plastic intake connects to the slam pannel.Undo these screws,pull the black plastic intake upwards holding it at the front with one hand and the back where it slots down into the filter box with the other hand.
Once this is out of the way you should see the air filter box clearly.Next step is to loosen the jublee clip that secures the air filter hose to the maf.Once this is loosened you must pull off the hose so you can get to the air box.
Next thing is to undo the screws on the airbox.You should be able to prise the airbox lid off at this stage revealing the oem filter.Its a very tight fit.Once you get the old filter out (mine came out in pieces)try to open the lid as wide as possible in order to slot in the K&N without damaging it.Thenits just a matter of putting everything back.

The problem wasn't really with new filters, it was with filters that people had cleaned and then over oiled and it was a real problem VAG cars.

If you have a duff MAF it dosen't just go from working one minute to shaged the next, it takes thousands of miles so a lot of people had duff MAF's and didn't know. The only real way of telling it if you fun the car on vagcom or if you have a very high tuned car then the decress in power may be more noticeable.

You don't need K&N filters in your car anyway, vag filters are good enough for 600+bhp

Had mine fitted for several months now and it makes a nice throatier induction noise.

No.

I cant see any point what so ever in installing a K & N filter.

It has been proven that a K & N filter will flow LESS air than a NEW OEM Filter.

On top of that you have the MAF issue, there is no doubt that a K & N filter will leave your MAF coated in oil and then its debatable as to whether it will cause the MAF to fail.

I installed a K & N filter in my last car and my MAF failed so i replaced it along with the OEM filter and never had any issues after.

Hugy's right, pretty easy to do. The filter housing is squashed right in the corner and its a wee bit difficult to get the old filter out. There's nothing complicated about it though. Take your time and don't apply too much force to the plastics and you'll have no problems. Mine took around ten minutes to do. The K&N is a lot thinner so it's easier to put in than the VAG one is to take out (mine split in two and if this happens you need to be very careful no bits remain in the housing or they'll get hoovered up!). Basically you can't go wrong. I haven't noticed much difference in power but the intake noise is definately different. Not noisier, just different - but better! If you've ever listened to the induction noise from a v8 TVR sitting at traffic lights it sounds like this... Regs oiling the MAF sensor. The filter comes pre-oiled and you should take note of how it looks when taken out of the packet. IT IS NOT DRIPPING WITH OIL! If you clean it and put in back in dripping then you're bound to have problems.. It may be coincidence or the fact that the drivetrain etc on my car is loosening up a bit, but the economy does seem marginally better too.
