Checked mine tonight and after a 1000 miles it's around the minimum mark.
What oil do you use to top up, and would it be about 1 litre i should add?
Thanks mark

Mark,
Check the oil with the engine at operating temp, after leaving it standing for about 2-3 minutes to allow the oil to run back into the sump. You should get a correct reading using this method.Did Preston Audi not give you a litre of engine oil with the car?.Im going to change my oil and filter at around 1500 - 2000 miles, just for good measure.Regards, SIMON.

Not unless it's in the boot, i'll have a look tom. Yes i checked after about two minutes after switching off. My car was quite smokey from new, but seems less so now, so i'm not too surprised that it needs a little oil. You going to do the change yourself? (sounds like you intend keeping this one - you still miss the M5 a little?( i think i recall you had an m5?))

Mark - with regards to which oil to use, Audi say the only 'official' oil that they recommend is Castrol SLX Longlife III. If you go, say into Halfords, they will probably tell you that this has been replaced by Castrol Edge. However this is not the case, SLX III is still available, but usually only thro' the VW/Audi network.
The specification (i.e SAE 5W-30 VW 504 00 / 507 00) on the back of both SLX & Edge bottles is the same!
Whether this is marketing on Audi's part I don't know. The cost is roughly the same (approx £15) per litre. If you shop around you can get these oils cheaper.

Hello Mark,
Yes, im going to change the oil myself, its quite an easy job to do.I will speak to the oil man as regards choice of oil to use, but so far after research, i am of the opinion that the Fuchs titan gt 5w is the oil to go for.I will probably order it from Opie oils nearer the time.I actually do still miss the M5, because it was just so damnd fast in a straight line.I think it was actually quicker that a previous 996 turbo i had.Watching some of the movies on the M5 Board, this seems to prove the case. When i had a good test drive of the RS4 demo, i remember thinking, where is the power, where is the performance?.It took me three test drives to finally make up my mind on the RS4, but i am really happy with it now.No, its not as fast as the M5, but somehow that doesnt seem to matter.I just love the whole experience of it.Regards, SIMON.

My dealer supplied Mobil 1 ESP 5W/30 in the leather case (also marked Mobil). Edge 5W/30 is a rename of Longlife 3. Any oil matching VW504/507 spec is suitable. There have been other threads debating the merits of Castrol vs Fuchs vs Mobil or Shell & Motul for that matter. Castrol stamped on th filler cap but this probably a marketing arrangement a person in the know reckoned Fuchs provide the factory fill

Shell Helix or something like that is a good choice and is mentioned in the manual. I had an Oil check done by Audi on mine and used 468ml for 1000km. Youd think that was high till you see the manual actually states up to 500ml per 1000km depending on use.

Very stupid question; is there a warning light that comes on when you are low on oil. I'm sure there is... but if so why are you checking the oil levels? Or is best to keep it relatively full rather then letting it get so low that the light has to come on..?
Regards,
AL

I've not seen a warning light on yet (presume there is one) - but would rather check it myself monthly. Unlikely, but possible for the oil light to malfunction.

I think the warning light should be treated as an urgent last resort warning not a regular prompt to top up. The oil should be checked regularly until you can judge your consumption.

The warning LIGHT is for low oil PRESSURE - by then your engine is knackered!
There is also a DIS warning for low oil LEVEL, but by then the level is below the MIN on the dipstick - so it's a bit late.
If you love your RS4, it's worth checking the oil level and other consumables...
BTW whatever happened to POWER? The acronym for what to check WEEKLY on your car:
Petrol
Oil
Water (i.e. the coolant level and washer fluid level)
Electricity (i.e. the battery)
Rubber (i.e. the tyres and drive belts)

These things are certainly partial to the odd litre of oil. Just over 1k miles and already used 1.75litres of oil!

I suggest posters check the other oil threads on the forum.
I observed some funny behaviour with my oil levels.
The car actually requires 9.5 litres after an oil change rather than the ~8 the handbook says.
If your car has not been correctly filled when you collect it (which I find hard to believe - although with Audi dealers anything is possible!), you may find that you need to add a lot more oil than you might ordinarily because the car was not filled correctly from day one.
This will manifest itself in strange level behaviour depending on the operating temperature of the oil.
The only way to get a handle on how much it is really using is, unfortunately, to change it out, and start again with knowledge of exactly how much you have put in.
Still, a new car needs that anyway and it shouldn't cost you more than ~£120, including filter, oil, labour and VAT.
I'm staggered that people take the view they'll just drive until the light comes on.
Its not hard to check an oil level.

I was looking in the boot to see what oil they gave me with my car... It was Castrol SLX Longlife II 0W-30. Should I put that stuff in my car or chuck it away and get something else?
