Oil change or not?

I have always changed the oil on my cars at 3000 miles regardless of what the dealer of manufacturer tells me. Although with the RS4 I am being told not to bother and to just keep topping it up on a regular basis.

1. Does anyone here have an opinion on this?
2. What oil is suggested, or just keep to the long life oil?
3. Am I just paranoid and wasting time and money?

I have seen too many engines that are left for the year or driven hard with metal and debris in them when not changed regularly.

Thanks

I had a complete oil and filter change at 2000 miles to remove the metal debris and would highly recommend it. This engine is very highly tuned and will thank you for it later in its life.

It is good practice to change oil regularly...much more so than manufacturer recommends.

I tend to go for a change every 3-4k miles and I watch the service centre do it (if I don't do it myself). It can only be a good thing. If a dealer says you don't need it, insist it is done...but just make sure they do actually change the oil, rather than charge you for doing no work!

Totally agree, worth changing the oil regularly and within the first 1000 miles of ownership regardless of what the dealer tells you.

Any idea where the filter is!!

Filter is beneath the carbon fibre cover at the back of the engine.

OIl change - yes.

Special oil - come on as long as meets or exceeds what is in the servcie book, that will do the trick surely?

5-30 is not that resiliant at high temps is it? What about some 0-50 or similiar?

changed the oil on mine and I don't know whether I'm imagining it or not but it definitley seems to run better and be better on the MPG.

well worth it but I'm not goign to do it every 3-4k. I might as well have bought a Fezza 456 if I wanted to spend that much on maintenance.

Surely the oil filter will deal with the 'metal debris'. It seems to me this is a bit early at 1000 - 2000 miles to change the oil. With the new synthetic oils I would've thought you could of left it far longer without any detriment to the engine.
It seems that you are spending money to benefit future owners of your cars unless you intend to keep them very long term. For the money Audi charge to do this it's going to cost you a small fortune each year. I really love my car but I'd rather wait and do it each year which would be at about 6K miles intervals.

If you do it yourself and in fairness it is not a hard job, you could do it frequently and not have the expense of the the stealers horrific labour prices.

I would di it every 3-4k miles as a matter of course, its the life blood of the engine....personal preference though.

The most tricky bit of doing the oil change yourself is removing the undertray. You really need the car up on a set of ramps to get it removed easily.
