Thought I'd try the sport mode from 1st and before I could tear myself away from the glorious noise I was in the redline!!!
whoops, not even 60 miles on the car yet. I take it I need to be more careful?

Funny - did exactly the same yesterday (with virtually identical mileage...)

I've done it a few times now keeping eyes on road whilst engine revs forever. No harm done as that it what the limiter is there for, just don't miss 5th and get 3rd on a downchange.

Very good for the piston ring seal, especially early on in the cars life.
It is thought that many of the b7,s have been run in too gently causing poor ring seal.

you need to yoyo , ie slow down from high revs with engine breaking, make for good seal and more power

Just 60 miles on the clock, I assume not from brand new otherwise you'll have invalidated yor warranty?

How do you mean Rob?

I thought all RS4's had a run-in period. If you exceeded 5k revs (or whatever) in the first x miles, you invalidated your warranty.

nonsense
(I hope)
my dealer said "take it easy over the first few hundred miles"

I was told that if you exceed the running in instructions (7000 rpm max) that the engine management recorded it and it would nullify the warranty.

If the RS4 ECU has data-logging capabilities, you may have problems with warranty although it isn't that simple.
For the benefit of the car, the last thing I would do is follow the manufacturer run-in procedure. The best results are achieved as follows:

I asked my dealer about run in procedure etc when i collected the car. Was told to just drive the thing but let it warm up properly first. Took it relatively easy for the first 200 miles before pushing up the rev range and changing the oil and filter at 600miles, very important in my opinion if your planning to drive it hard from new.

Second that.
The last two 996 turbos i had and this RS4 were run in hard, pretty much as per the link above. i have found that it seriously reduces oil consumption. The RS4 has 1500 miles on the clock now and the oil is still showing just below max.

Sound like the right thing to do.
Every person with a reasonable level of knowledge agrees with the importance of pressing on in the early miles with pulls up the rev range and engine braking.
Good to see your agreement on this.
A good ring seal will definitely keep the oil out of the chamber and protect the oil from dilution of fuel.
