I keep seeing posts on TSN that say the bi-xenons are "neutral" (whatever that means!?), so they do not need adjusting for use in Europe.

Not 100% happy with that, and since we're planning to go to France both in the Summer and the Autumn I'd like to know for sure if a gendarme is going to have a valid excuse to stop me or not.

apparently you have to take the headlamps out, flick a switch behind the unit then re insert. This is basically what you need to do on the 997 too - took me about 15 mins last time i went to europe. I asked at the dealership and they said they would need to do or show me how...

That's true on the xenons on SOME B6 S4's and A4's but not for the bi-Xenons on B7's.

Hmmm not getting very far here are we?

Xenons on my Golf have a switch on the back but it is a bugger to get to!

I've been trying to get an accurate and correct answer to this ever since I collected my RS4 in July!!!

I've looked at the adaptive bi-xenons that used to be on my RS4 (they were orange indicator ones, so I've swapped them for clear indicator ones), and there definitely is NOT an adjuster on them.

So what's this "neutral" headlights mean? They seem to have more light going to the left than the right, so I don't really "buy" that they don't need adjusting.

I suppose it's too much to hope that anyone working for a dealer or Audi UK can answer this CORRECTLY!? (everything else they seem to mess up).

It is not clear whether this is the case for bi-xenons. Otherwise it is a case of:

Are you saying that you bought new headlights to have the new clear lenses or you've swap them somehow? I've got the orange indicators and hate them.

I have been living on mainland continent for a year now with my S4 and I have not changed the lights over. Most of the motorways I have bee non tend to have high centra lreservations so oncoming track is not effected. Also due to the Xenons being self levelling so minimses any glare.

Glyn - nothing like that on the bi-xenons that came off my RS4.

Not surprisingly since ............. those pictures are of a B6 - look at the shape of the headlamps!!!

Jezzer - I bought new headlamps to get rid of those horrible pieces of orange plastic.

Over on http://www.audi-accessories.co.uk/index ... ductId=242 they are selling the Audi headlight protectors for the B7 (8E0 072 100) that come with add-on beam deflectors.

Here's what they say:

"Pair of Headlamp Protectors for the Audi A4 B7 model, including two sets of Beam Deflectors and marking points etched in the plastic to locate them. The quick and easy way to set up your A4 for the Continent.

Please note; the Beam deflectors are only suitable for Halogen light vehicles. Xenon and Bi-Xenon equipped B7 A4's use a Neutral Beam which reqiures no adjustment when travelling temporarily in Europe."

Righty, we still don't seem to have resolved this issue.

However, the "neutral beam" is nonsence - the dipped beam has a clear left kick.

Looking at the images in GlynG60s post, the top two images do seem to be the B7 units, but as PetrolDave rightly pointed out, the bottom image is the B6 headlamp.

I've had a shufty at mine, and unfortunately, you do need to remove the headlamps to gain access to the rear cover (the left one is blocked by the power steering resevoir, and the right is blocked by the airbox).

Dave, you stated you swapped your orange indcator headlamps for clear indcator headlamps - did you do this yourself? If so, how did you actually remove the headlamps, because they are quite different to the B6 lamps.

I really would like to sort mine out either this Wendesday or Thursday.

Whoopsssssss.... I forgot to tell you lot... I had my car in Audi Maidstone for something else and asked them what needs to be done ref this issue; I was informed that it's something that can be done via the ECU (or something like that) anyhow, when i picked it up the service guy said you will get a beep and a warning light flash up for a second or so when we have activated the change and sure enough thats what happens. I ended up not driving at night in Germany so Im still unsure if they are ok but they "seemed" to know what they were talking about!!!

can i just ask whats with the changing of the lights or beams, whats the go with that in europe, why does it have to be done
