RE: E39 M5(an old one) v RS4 on an airfield
I'm surprised at that. I know the M5 is a fast car and I considered a E39 a while back, but I thought the RS4 would have done better than that. Not even close, it was demolished in every run. Even the better launch from the standing start saw it quickly reeled in.

I didnt expect that.
I had a race with a standard M5 in my stage 2+ S4 running bout 350hp and 540 nm torque and beat it, just. Wasnt much of a race. Was just a quick one at rolling start and I was passing it slowly.
I cant believe that an RS4 couldnt take the M5. Thats very strange, I know the new M5 in a way lot faster than the RS4 B7. But the old one I though was going to be no competition.
Im pretty sure id be able to take a B7 RS4 or maybe at least equal it on the straights.
I just looked at the specs on the B7 RS4. Your 0-100 guys is quite good. at about 10.7 seconds. The M5 is supposed to be slower at 11.3. So That M5 must be modded a bit more than stated. Its wirth knowing that both cars weigh in the same with the exception the M5 is 3kg heavier. Yes thats only THREE KG heavier. I would have though it be a lot lighter but it isnt.
Good find Andy.

4wd drag on the RS4 & the M5 is about 420-430BHP of course it would beat the rs4... no surprises there for me. Standing start though be closer, but the M5 would catch & pass though. The down side to 4wd *sigh*

RE: E39 M5(an old one) v RS4 on an airfield
Great video always knew M5 is a more extreme car but that is impressive, is the M5 a stock vehicle or has it been modified.

I guess 4 wheel drag is a point, but also means should be off the line quicker which it is. But the Its a shame Audi cant compete with the likes of BMW on even the older M5. Seeing that is a dissapointment.
Saying that the M5's have always been very quick cars. And the new one. Well thats just supercar territory, just about.

edcase has just come from RS6 to E39, wouldn't it be great to get a strip of tarmac together for a day and do some "research"? I'd LOVE to know how I'd get on against that...
RS4 B5. Where it all started.
RS6+ Never to be replaced.
Replaced by: 997 Turbo. Didn't like.
Replaced by RS6. I like(d).

That M5 has been modded with approx 30 HP more.
RE: E39 M5(an old one) v RS4 on an airfield
The M5's competitor is the RS6... I should think the RS6 would hold its own. RS4 is aimed to compete against the M3... the new M3 will almost certainly be quicker up and running because of the 4wd drag. I know I would rather be "slower" on a top end run/rolling start, but know if it were wet/dodgy surface/average driver I would easily be the quicker car.

Very true indeed Leon/. The AWD does have its advantages.
I would like to see a race between the RS6 and the new M5 on a drag strip.
Anyone seen any videos of any examples of stock or tuned ones?

look up the 1/4 times. Prob with that is 1/4 strips are dry & very grippy! So would probably favour the new M5. The RS6 is not very good on a 1/4 I dont think.

not the most reliable though I believe - their fancy inlet system gives trouble?

Interesting video. I would bet that RS4 was still fairly new. WIth a few thousand further "loosening" miles, it would probably be more than a match.
