My avant isn't too good, especially when cold. With 2000 miles on the clock, I would have liked it to have become smoother but it hasn't. Mine also bulks going into third both from second and fourth from time to time. Iii mentioned it to Audi when it was in getting fans fixed but no comment was made other than it is common to all RS models.

well im only up to 700 miles in mine.. so maybe it will ease up.. 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd not too bad.. but i need to really jam it into 1st from neutral.. the misses finds it really hard but to be honest not sure why i insured her on it in the 1st place! haha

My RS4 Avant (1300 miles so far) has a much better gear change than either of my S4 Avants (2003 - 12000 miles and 2004 -31000 miles) ever had.

1st to 2nd seems to be my problem, if I’m not careful the gear change feels very juddery. Slightly higher revs during gear change seems to make it a bit smoother.

N to 1st will losen up, it did for me. Also, there is a technique to it. If you try to slide the shifter all the way up the left hand bank of the box, you'll run over the notch. The trick is not to try to slide up against the wall of the gearbox, but put it just shy of the wall, to avoid the notch.

You'll get a smoother shift that way, but still won't be as smoth as the other gears.

Btw, my 3rd gear can be crunchy at times, a bit notchy. No grinding noise, just a tactile crunch.

I think the gearbox in the RS4 is very very good, but still probably shy of an S2000 or an M3 gearbox.
