3 weeks with my RS4

Hi,

as one of the first to get a B5 RS4 back in 2001 and who then suffered the full effect of the 'bendy wheel' issue on used values, I had initally cancelled my long standing order for a B7 RS4.

About 1 month ago, my local Audi dealer contacted me and offered my the opportunity to get into a B7, as they had been offered an 'Audi Show Car'.

Having followed the early reviews of the left-hookers, my excitement about the RS4 had reached a point that I was kicking myself for having cancelled my order. This phone call turned into a rare bit of good luck.

A few days later, the car arrived at my dealer for viewing, 2 seconds later, the papers were signed and the partnership began.

It's Daytona with the technology pack, sports seats etc etc. Was original registered in Feb, so it was a 55 plate but that didn't matter to me - it has only done 500 miles.

3 weeks on, the car has done 2,500 miles and it is very very good.

It is quick but very refined and entirely discreet. The few people that recognise what it is almost twist their heads off their shoulders trying to look but most see 'another Audi'.

I would agree with the criticism levels at the seats - they are very tight at the base, even when the bolsters are completely extended. Not uncomfortable but not ideal.

The real trick is the handling, since my last RS4, I have had a plethora of iron including 2 x RS6s, 1 x 911 TT, 1 x 911 GT2 and an M3 CSL. The B7 RS4 has better real world handling than pretty much anything else. Whilst the CSLs are better on the track (no doubt), I do not take my everyday car on the track, I take it on the UKs road with their infinitely variable surfaces and our 'changeable' weather. It feels like the love child of a Suburu P1 getting it on with an M5.

Those that have offered the car, you will not be disappointed, it is fabulous. I don't have a great track record (excuse the pun) of keeping my cars for very long but who knows, perhaps this will change.

Here are some pics..

They do on my computer at work, and I'm drooling already as this is pretty much the exact spec of my car I'm picking up next Thurs :)

Excellent sounds like you were in the the right place at the right time which is how I ended up with mine!!

When people ask me what it's like I describe it as the love child of the Evo VI and S4 I used to own so interesting to hear yours was spawned from an M5 and P1   !!

Did you frequent BM3W by any chance looking at your array of previous cars and your recent move to the RS? Thie list kinda reads like mine, although I have promised myself I will keep this one more than the usual 6-9 months!!! We'll see, although for now I can't fault it and am just happy my ass isn't as lardy as it was 6 months ago otherwsie I may have been in trouble

Rodney J, I enjoyed your comments, I think the "all rounder" certainly sums up the car. DG certainly looks the goods, what is your all time favourite of the cars listed?

I`m not a trackday fan so I`m interested in your appraisal of the B7. I`ve had my B5 for 2yrs now so there is an obvious question on my mind; have they got it right with this one? ie. does it stop and does the suspension work on normal British roads without you wondering which wall its going to pitch you through?Still think the B5s looks can`t be improved on.whichever colour.

@Rodney,

That's an impessive list of "iron" you've had there!

It surprises me that you find the RS4 to be even better than the porkers...

Nevertheless i would wait for the RS4 Avant to come out,i think the sedan isn't spacey enough..

But seeing your list of iron i reckon you've got a Range Rover somewhere in a shed for wintertime....

Cheers

I love the P1 and M5 thing. When I drove the RS4 I thought it felt like a very grown up version of my old Scoob STi. Colour looks fab too, I can't wait until June!!
