Double Glazing - an effective security measure?

Post by Nipper » Thu Mar 30, 2006 4:18 pm

Has anyone ticked this on the options list?

I'm starting to think that it may be a good idea in terms of additional car security, however it's only for the front side windows, but these are the obvious attack points for any would be car theives/car jackers. If you fit an after market security film it'll cost a couple £ 000. Surely it'd be better to have a factory fit security measure, plus it'll improve sound insulation.

What to you all think? Is it a gimmick or is it £400 well spent. If it saves just 1 attempted breakin or carjack it will have paid for itself.

Please lets have your views.

Not sure about the weight, but I'm sure it can't be significant. I'm just not sure if it is effective for security?

Tanoga,

It's listed in the A4 size black brochure (Introducing the new RS4) on page 15 in the 'Safety and Security' section.

Friend of mine has an A8 with double glazing, had an attemped break in and the double glazing did stop the person getting in - repair bill is over a grand though as they also kicked the door in presume in frustraction of not being able to break the glass.

So it does do the job!!!

It's car jacking that worries me most. My wife was car jacked a few years back whilst at a set of lights in Manchester. A brick throught the passenger windoe and before you know it her bag was snatched. Fortunately that was all they were after, but it could have been more serious. Would double glazing withstand the force of a house brick or similar? Has anyone seen double glazing demo'd or are any stats availabe from Audi.

Matt C or Skodaw, do you have any Audi stats or info.

I'm not sure a DG unit will stop a 'brick' unless it has laminated glass or polycarbonate laminations within.
I've been investigating the application of 'security film' applied to the inside surface of the glass and thus provide a serious hindrance to any would be carjacker. This would also negate expensive repair bills should an attempt be made. Polycarbonate 'TUFFAK' would be ideal glass replacement apart from the fact that it will scratch easily compared to glass.
The determind carjacker may come at you with a chainsaw just to get through the window.......!

"One of the rare exceptions was a chopping device, which consisted of a spring-loaded, razor-sharp blade, fitted to the underside of the vehicle. This blade could be activated by the push of a button to slice off the feet of a would-be hijacker. Considering the danger posed to innocent bystanders, no wonder this contraption was doomed from the beginning."

SUPERB!! sounds good to me!! haha.. quality webpage..

LOL, i had a mk1 escort years ago that was forever getting broken into, eventually i fitted a washer jet to each door fuelled by a bottle of blue dye, it looked a dog but hell, once word got around it remained unmolested

The double galzing is only on the front doors! As long as the villains don't know that I guess it will help security.
The brochure sells it as a sound insulating option.
