Running in?

Post by Davey_B » Thu Mar 02, 2006 2:17 pm

So those of you who have got the cars already, has the dealer mentioned any specific running in rules. Apart from the usual don't stamp on the brakes for the first 100 miles or so.

If not what's the concensus on new engines. Do you treat them mean to keep them keen or steady wins the race?

Full revs are not to be used untill 2,500 miles - and if you start the car from cold you should run it untill reached op temp - if you need to move it off the drive for swmbo - PUSH IT!!!

Otherwise engine may flood - requiring call out to Audi roadside assist -- You have been warned !!!

What does full revs mean? Lift off just before the limiter or something more conservative like 4000rpm. The 350Z I bought new could not be taken above 4000rpm for the first 1500miles. Is it a case of use you noddle and be sensible? Some clearer guidelines from Audi might be a good thing.

Bit concerned about the run it until operating temperature thing. I only live 1/2 mile from work so does that mean I've got to walk for fear my £50K car won't start when I get back in it. What happens if you just pop to a local shop, a five minute journey for most people who live anywhere half urban. Bit poor that really. PUSH IT - you're having a laugh aren't you?

My dealer said they were told 1,000km (620mls) below circa 3,000rpm. I was also told no cold starts i.e. if you run the car even for a short distance let it warm up fully. I must admit that I was more concerned about driving the car than reading the owners manual. Will have a look tonight see if it says anything about running in.

I got mine yesterday and driving with a 3krpm limit is really difficult.

Seems crazy to me what with modern technology, you would have thought and engine like that would be bench run in!?! :audibash:

You can't go a car giving 400+ bhp then say use half of it for 3k miles surely, even the cold start worries me!

Be interested if more of those that are lucky enough to have taken delivery can add to this thread.

..IS

P.S ..bought an April slot that has turned in to a June slot!! :boohoo:

Its interesting that Audi are recommending quite stringent running in procedures. Unfortunately, the 17 year old apprentice grease monkey that 'evaluates' the car whilst the service manager is at lunch, is unlikely to follow these guidelines me thinks.

Audi Technical As follows:

0-1000 k/m No more than 1/3 Full throttle; No Top speed or high engine revs.
1000-1500 k/m slowly increase engine revs until 1500 k/m

For people with RS6 manuals; see your running in section; the B7 uses the same period.

The fuel flooding problem has been a very isolated problem; which you will only experience in extreme conditions. Taking your car to running temperature seems over kill; the engine management system is designed to control and restrict damage; so my advice would be the same as any performance car; go easy after first starts. Even more so during the first 1500 k/m

I am trying to find an internal technical article on the isolated over fuelling issue; once I find it I will post for information.

It is totally unnecessary to run your car is for 2500 miles; it will do more harm than good.

But then what do I know!!

Must admit, we have not had any issues -- the cars have behaved perfectly normally even if only started for short period -- there is obviously an element of common sense involved with running any new vehicle, personally I would not use full throttle for 1,000 miles and limit even light throttle use to a max of 5,000 rpm.

I think the overfuel problem related to repeated cold starts without being driven -- so should be safe.

Oh and yes I was having a Laugh when I said push it -- we certainly didnt push any of ours -- and they are non the worse!!

Anyway I should think anyone getting in and starting up wont be able to resist a little blat anyway !!

Anyone tried to push an awd car - it has to be downhill to shift all the transmission drag....

So the old wives tale of 'run a car in quick, it willl be quick' is load of bol*ocks. This thinking should be left well and truely to the Mondeo masses. I have to say I always have looked after my engines and reving the sh1t out a new engine has never been my thing. Swarf may be a thing of the passed in the modern engines, but components still need to bed in.
RS4 Straight out the box - gone :-(

Davey B, The first 50 - 100 hours of an engines life is what makes it, I have to say on the B5 RS4 and RS6 running in was even more important than the B7 due to much higher total engine temperatures. (no turbo`s) It’s also worth remembering that all Audi’s have a large brain, and they don’t mind telling your dealer if you have been a bad boy. Don’t ever buy an ex demo RS4; as they will be the troublesome cars due to 15 test pilots daily, plus the dealer principal will need to have a go, plus the sales manager will need a go, then the service manager will feel left out; so will need to do a daily road test. O god I forgot all the master technicians; they will need to check hourly for problems.

when i worked at audi all we had to do with new cars was drive them and use common sense..running in is all about letting the engine get hot then allowing it to cool..engines now adays all have tolerances that cator for every different type of driver..so if ya really wanna red line it once its warmed up it would be fine or drive it like a sunday afternoon..(no offence) i no 50k is alot of money but audi spend millions getting it rite..so enjoy it guys and 1 day i,ll own 1 too... :kissmyrings: :redrs4:
