No more turbos in RS cars?

According to Autoweek... "Audi has ditched turbocharging in favor of a bigger, highly strung naturally aspirated engine. This is a move Audi insiders say will be repeated in coming years on new generation Audis, including a new RS6, RS8, and the anticipated production version of the Le Mans concept."

If this is right, the RS6 could be the last turbo RS car.

I will be the first to admit that AutoWeek is not always the most accurate (the same article mentions that the double spoke wheels on the press photos are 18 inchers) but...

What if this is true? Comments?

We were told this in 2003 at the factory visit, and we all hoped they would change their minds but alas no...
The RS2/4/6 will go down as classica

I'd say there's got to be a saving on all that plumbing which means greater profits, and face it if you can design a V10 it is not too hard to chop it down into a V8 or V6.

And then of course there's the US market.. say no more..

As far as I am aware, no turbos has has been Audi's policy for some time.

Higher revving n/a engines are seen as a more elegant solution than turbo(s). I think they are also more expensive to develop and build than turbos.

It also mostly gets round the problem of modification related warranty claims.

We cannot blame the American market for this change in policy either, Audi has to use a version of a current engine for the RS cars, which engine could they have turbocharged for the RS4?

Why are we all so surprised and upset that the new RS4 has no turbos ? it has been known for over a year.

Have not driven a decent FSI Audi engine yet......the A3 3.2 plant sounds terrible when worked hard....compare it to the 1.8t engine in the S3.....i know which one i would take.

DavidT makes a strong point. I agree that Audi is becomming a little more luxurious. To build a non turbo engine can be more expensive to build than a Turbo engine. Maybe Audi will eventually head back to the turbo engines, but either way, are you really that upset about the Turbos. Yea, it was cool that the RS cars had turbos at one point. We should just accept that Audi is trying to get past the turbos, and maybe they will have a car that is better than the Turbos in a few years to come.

I was under the impression that the Audi V10 design was nothing more than two of the old five cyclinder units mated to a new crank casing?

Isn't the 4.2 v8 fsi just a development of the same basic unit they have been using for sometime in the range, A8's etc.? and aslo a version of the one currently in the rs6 that has the olde turbos on?

My local dealer told me yestersday that the new RS6 will have the Lambo engine, V10 twin turbo producing 600BHP! Doesn't guarentee anything but where there is smoke............ I told him that if he could confirm I would put a deposit down on one.

Saw the new RS4 in Geneva this week and was disappointed, front looks terrible, with bigger front seats the cabin looks smaller. The back end looks OK though! Decided to keep old RS4 and take up option on AM Vantage!

Like the sound of that, believe it when I see it though. Didn't someone also say the the Lambo V10 doesn't fit in the A6?
Can we also assume that the new S6 will get the new RS4 engine??

Presumably with the same specific outputs' as the S4 & RS4 then the new S6 & RS6 could have 420ps and 500ps resp from a 5.0 litre V10. Question is when?
