Latest views on Brake Pad options

Started with OEM.

Replaced fronts with the Ferodo FDB4165. Not great or bad, just fine.
One reason for replacing at the time was the OEM pad problems with pins scoring sliders before the sensors triggered. Is this resolved now? Must be….

Now replacing all my discs and lines and fluid. Contemplating the following options.
Road use only. With trips around the alps so will get some hard use but once a year…

1) OEM again - Expensive and I recall dusty, but rears have lasted very well (only ever had OEM rears)
2) EBC Yellow stuff - mixed reviews, but many happy users I see.
3) DS2500, had them on previous Audi, with the cost of discs on the RS, are they kind enough for day to day use without eating discs too much. Happy with the sensor delete etc.
4) Anything else?

I tried some cheap Pagid pads once...... lasted one drive as they were dangerous! Stuck with OEM ever since.
The backing plate pins scoring the disc issue has been resolved years ago.

One option I was really tempted by was Endless MX72 pads. They get rave reviews from R35 GT-R owners but the price is quite high!
Still, low dust, excellent performance AND kind to disc rotors was never going to be a cheap option.

Could work out cost effective if rotor life is extended though......

DS2500. Fitted front and rear a year or so ago, coded out the sensors and they are excellent. A serious step up in performance over standard pads and wear has been nice and even (and very minimal so far). They aren't cheap though.

Its over 10 years since i ran them...

Found a bit of feedback comparing DS2500, Yellow stuff and MX72 here, just one opinion, but interesting:

Excellent from cold. I took the RS out yesterday funnily enough for the first time in a while, was about 2 degrees here and they instill confidence straight away. I can really leave it late to brake if I need or want to and absolutely could not do this with OEM pads. The OEM pads gave me very little confidnence on such a heavy performance car like the B7.

I used a company called WG Motorparts and paid £300 for fronts and £130 for rears so £430 total. This was 1 year ago, so prices may have gone up a bit. Annoyingly, their website doesn't seem available at present so not sure if they have stopped trading or just doing some maintenance. But either way, gives you some added context on price. May be worth dropping them a message on Facebook. Otherwise, I think eBay was 2nd cheapest when I was looking - and some of the eBay sellers will sell for less than the listed price if they have a website as they avoid eBay fees that way. £~500ish is ok but I wouldn't pay much more. With a bit of luck you'll be able to pick them up for high £400's.

They truly are an excellent pad for fast road/occasional track use. Unlike other track or fast road focussed pads, they aren't poor from cold or so track focussed that they become an issue for every day driving, which is great.

Will be interesting to get pricing in from all the MX72 suppliers, i am expecting all uk suppliers will be more than Nengun.
So clearly they are a lot more than DS2500, which is making the DS look attractive.

Question will be if my curiosity of the MX72 is worth the wait / money, they sound great, but also the most expensive pads on earth (it feels). :wink:

I had not factored in that 2 sets of pads are required for the front axle! Agreed that they sound absolutely perfect for fast road use but that price... If the dust is as easy to wipe off as they say and is non aggressive, then I suppose it would save on having the wheels refurbished every 5 years or so.

Man maths at its best....

It’s possible (hopeful) the front set could come as a full set. Other manufacturers don’t. But one supplier suggested he thinks they do today, will confirm.

If the front is a full set, I will be tempered to try them.

Yeah, I am tempted as well. But will need to wait until I need to replace my discs though.

I have no issue with the performance of the OEM pads and discs to be honest. But easy clean and low dust is selling it to me!!!

The other option is to switch to ceramic front discs but that is a massive expense. Plus you will go through rears much more quickly and the pedal feel is a bit wooden.

Autodoc are the cheapest for DS2500's front and rear. Get their app and set notifications. They regularly have 45-48% off deals. I got a full front & rear set for £384 delivered.
